Mobile team ejection
Does anybody know who actually wrote the article that appears in the softball news section about the team being ejected from the tournament? Just curious if the prosecutor is also the witness......

I wasn't there and would like to know about the call.
I have played against Riverside for the past 3 years, loosing to them in Plano and Gadsden this year, and know that they are a very intense team.

Hi Bruce in GA. I play for Riverside and here's what happened. We were playing Damon's (Maryland) and they had a man on ist and 2nd with either one or no outs(can't remember which). The batter hit the ball to our shortstop who threw to our 2nd baseman for the force and then he overthrew first attempting a double play. Here's the kicker. The runner going from first to second(who was forced out) continued running and hit 2nd and then went all the way to third trying to get in a rundown which is interference. He cause his other runner who had also gone to third to step off and we tagged him out. At that point, one umpire called both runners out and ended the inning. Then Damon's argued and the other umpire decided he had called time even though the overthrown ball was on the ground in foul territory against the dugout fence and the other runner was on third base and could have attempted to score.

It was still a live ball and time should never have been called(no one heard him call time either - we think it was just a copout). As you can imagine, an argument ensued and our shortstop was ejected for using a profanity. Then the tournament director got involved in the argument and told our shortstop and Manager to take our team and leave if we didn't like it because we were troublemakers. This incited the situation even further and the game was forfeited because our shortstop continued to argue. He probably should have been ejected for using profanity but we really got the shaft on this one.

What should have happened, is this. The runner who was forced out at 2nd base is guilty of interference simply by continuing to run and influencing the defense to play on him. The result of the interference is that the runner closest to home is also out. Inning over! A competent umpire (oxymoron for the most part in Mobile) would know that! Tourney directors in this outfit don't know anything but how much the entry fee is!

I would hope that an appeal with a review of the facts would allow Riverside to play next year. I know for teams in the Southeast SSWC is not a big deal, very few tournaments and the ones they do have are run poorly, on inappropriate field, without official scorers, and only one umpire (excluding Auburn, Al).
Good luck
