Age Requirements
I'm turning 55 in a few months & am tired of playing tournament ball with the kids. I have talked to several San Diego area league & travel teams & have been offered a position on their teams, but there seems to be some confusion in regards to the age requirements. One team informed me that a player is eligible when he is in his 55th. year, ie: if his birthday is in June he is elegible on Jan. 1. The team that they were playing protested and said that a player must be 55...no if's and's or buts...I think I may of opened a can of worms, but I just wanted to get on a competitive team and start playing ball with guys my own age. Any info. on this would be greatly appreciated. Mike

In SPA and SSWC you can play in an age group if you reach the minimum age any time during the year. If you turn 55 on 12/31/04, you would have been eligible to play 55+ during the 2004 season.

This time of year, there are several tournaments that allow teams to use players who would otherwise be eligible next year (i.e., if you turn 55 next year, you could play 55+ in these tournaments).

The SPA tournament in Baton Rouge and I believe the SSWC Winternationals in Ft. Myers are tournaments in which you can play a year earlier than your age. I don't know about the SSWC Winter Worlds in Vegas.

The tournaments BruceinGA refers to, as Bruce says, allow you to use guys that will be 50, 55, etc. in the upcoming year. The theory is to allows teams to being planning for the upcoming year and take a look at some guys moving up. It is a great concept and one we have used back when we played in the Winternationals each year. LL
