PHOENIX BALL FIELDS
Just curious to know why the World Tournament in Phoenix with teams from practically all across the country are being played on such suspect ball diamonds when there are two of the best softball complexes in the U.S. not being used. I'm talking about Victory Lane Sports Complex with six diamonds and Big League Dreams Park in Gilbert with eight fields?

Neither of the facilities mentioned are available for Friday through Sunday (all day and into the night on ALL three days each weekend) on either of the weekends of the World Championships due to pre-existing tournaments and league play they have booked ... The Phoenix area facilities being used, individually and collectively, are equivalent to or better than any other metropolitan area in the USA offering tournament class fields in this quantity required to host over 320 teams playing about 1,200 games on 26 fields at 6 sports complexes in 10 days ...

Note: Historically the Big League Dreams facilities throughout the West do not allow the use of the Miken Ultra II bats, which is an issue for many players participating in the SSUSA World Championships ...

An added note.....Big League Dreams here in the Valley is currently totally run down. Grass is dead and no one is taking responsibility. I played at Papago last weekend and it is in beautiful condition. Also, Rose Mofford Complex is the best in the state. Much nioer than Victory Lane.

I'd venture to say & without ever having played in Phoenix that St George would be equal to maybe even better than Phoenix with 'close' to the same number of fields. 5 parks countingthe 5 fields in Mesquite. Four parks in St G w\about 16-17 fields. Perhaps those who have been to both will reply.
Hope the fields are not like Dbax says the FOD fields are...But if they use the same sod St G does it will be close.

We played at Chavez last year and they were bad. All kinds of critter mounds in the outfield and no water available.

Victory Lane has the ASA Hispanic Worlds the first weekend and the USSSA Halloween Scream youth baseball the second weekend of the ssusa Worlds. taits- I have played in St. George and in about all of the Phoenix parks. St. George has great fields and the Huntsman is a special event, but it's not like either the SPA or ssusa Worlds. They do a one-time a year thing with a lot of other sports. I agree with Dbax about Papago and Rose Mofford being exceptional. DW is very nice and Chavez gets better each time I see it. Don't know about Camino since it's new.

St. George has without a doubt the best fields I have ever played on. I have played on some of the fields in Phoenix and would not complain. By the way, I like both locations as a destination spot.

On a scale of 1-10 the St George fields would have to be on the 10 side. I just got back from there & have played there 5 years and I would be hard pressed to name/find better playing facilities if we are talking west coast only (location/neighborhood/safety/ammenties/atmosphere / lodgings/appeal to spouse/scenic beauty).

I prefer the natural fields over the artificial as they do not change the game and if you are forced to slide on the natural fields (offense/defense) you heal better with less chance of infection than on the artificial turf so, personally, I would rule out Golden Eagle in Reno. Pretty to look at but I believe we got REAL lucky on the temperatures there this year. Even with the fogging/hosing system they have in place for the higher temps it would make for a humid/wet field and mess up anyone that needs to wear glasses.

Another case of plastic accentuating the view but it doen't quite play the same........... ( 8

Dave,
I see that some 50s teams are currently scheduled to play at Victory Lane on Friday morning, Oct. 24. Will we experience unusual bat restrictions in those games?
Thanks.

Victory Lane is a private park; so there could be gate admission.

Dbax,
I checked out the 3 pics on home page you gave, (Apperars to be Fenway). The 1st shot looks good as do the warning track and start of outfield at 2nd base. Wear and tear is always going to happen. Over all that field looks good.
Even St G. has some some worn areas after a season, but they try to actually replace bad spots with sod strips and or seed, I was told 2 years ago.
I was trying to get same mixture for my place to use but it's not climate friendly was told... Too much shade in my yard where I wanted it.
