March 6, 2009 ShaneV Men's 55 393 posts | SSUSA Classic Rock at the RAC Qualifier Lacey WA New Tournament added to the schedule today - August 22-23. This new complex is nearly completed and ready for us. The Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey WA includes 4 hybrid softball fields, artificial turf infields, natural grass outfields and state-of-the-art in every way. The theme is something I've been wanting to do for years. Come see what it's all about! There are also two other senior events at this complex, in June and July. |
March 8, 2009 Enviro-Vac Men's 65 489 posts | That's good news Shane. |
March 8, 2009 ShaneV Men's 55 393 posts | I'm hoping to make this a real blast of an event! It is difficult to do 5GG in two days with a good turnout so I'm starting out with 4GG. With DE brackets all you have to do is win one bracket game to get 5 or more games. For those of you interested in playing this event, let me know your interest in Classic Rock bands. I intend to name the divisions after the most popular bands/songs and rename the four fields with Classic Rock themes. If I can get any sponsor support we'll have raffles and give-aways with a Classic Rock and Softball themes. And with approval from the facility we'll have music throughout the tournament. Imagine stepping on to the field for your first game warmup with your favorite 1960's-1970's band playing your song! I can't imagine a better combination than playing softball and classic rock! |
March 8, 2009 Jawood Men's 50 943 posts | We would love to play in this event in our own state, however it looks like we are not welcome, judging by only letting major, AAA and AA enter. |
March 8, 2009 ShaneV Men's 55 393 posts | Jawood - I will accept any entries and run a division or combine if there are enough teams. It will be up to you to bring your buddies! There may be one or two 50M+ in WA and one in OR. If a couple from outside the NW would come, we'll do it! |
March 8, 2009 ShaneV Men's 55 393 posts | Jawood - If I assumed incorrectly that you're M+, my bad. At the other end I do intend to include non-SSUSA non-classified teams (A) so they can see what SSUSA is all about. We did this last year in Kennewick (April) and Olympia (August). |
March 8, 2009 Jawood Men's 50 943 posts | Yes we are Major plus and we just want to have some place where we can play locally. We don't have the $$ to travel that much. There will only be two Major plus teams in the northwest so possibily some sort of equalizer will work against the other teams entered. |
March 8, 2009 Lecak Men's 60 1026 posts | Shane and Gary I don't your area that well, how about adding a 40 division. Gary we are going to play in Fullerton CA (Socal) next weekend in a 12 team 40 tournament. We'll have our hands full and get some really good work in. There used to be a handful of good 40 teams in the Northwest. Makes it easy on a guy like Shane because it is easy to add the better 50 teams and match against a middle of the road 40 team which can still put a beating on even a high class 50 team. Everyone is happy. Shane if your interested I'm sure SSUSA headquarters can put you in touch with the 40 national director quite easily. |
March 8, 2009 Jawood Men's 50 943 posts | There is another 40+ team trying to form here in the Seattle area. Some big name players. |
March 9, 2009 ShaneV Men's 55 393 posts | The event listing has been changed to include M+ and 40's. Hope to see at least 2 50M+ and 3-4 40's! |
March 9, 2009 JamesLG 420 posts | Shane: This is a great idea and you should get a good turnout. I have not seen the new fields yet but they sound very nice. The thought of going to bat with Led Zephlin playing in the background just sounds like a winner. Thanks: James |
March 9, 2009 Jawood Men's 50 943 posts | Thanks,Shane. Add beer to your combination of softball and classic rock. |
March 9, 2009 ShaneV Men's 55 393 posts | JamesLG, Have 2 cd set Best of Zeppelin Early Days & Latter Days, and 3 cd set How The West Was Won. Should find what you're looking for. Jawood, Sorry, you'll have to take care of that without me at the local pub. I'll have 20 years sober if I make it to September 8th 2009. All my drinking teams had a softball problem through 1988. Thought I'd have to quit softball because they went together so well! Managed to just quit the booze and other stuff. All, When someone guesses or mentions my favorite classic rock band (Zeppelin is right up there), I'll have to come up with a prize. No cheating from my teammates - you'll just get benched! Shane |
March 9, 2009 JamesLG 420 posts | Hi Shane: I had my last drink September 28th 1984. The day before my 31st birthday. Alcohol kicked my butt for many years and I could not take the beating any longer. The following year was the only year I did not play softball because of the same reason you state. Congratulations on your near 20 years sober. Thanks: James |
March 9, 2009 ShaneV Men's 55 393 posts | Small world JamesLG! Isn't life a kick without it! I had no idea how much fun softball could be all by itself! I could never do before what I do today with one little change. And I must say, I'd already had enough for a lifetime. I hesitated just for a moment before I included this sub-topic of the thread. Oh well, now it's out there! |
March 10, 2009 JamesLG 420 posts | Shane: I have thought about bringing this subject up on the board before. Being a drunk was such hard work for me the last few years I drank it was just not fun anymore. You are so right in life does have so many fun things to offer. At the qualifier in Kent next month I will be sure to come over and meet you. Thank You: James |
March 13, 2009 ShaneV Men's 55 393 posts | James, see you at Russell Rd in Kent, one of my favorite places to play or umpire. Ordered 5 cd's last night to begin accumulating prizes for raffle drawings: One of my favorites: Supertramp - Crime of the Century. And another: Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed (remastered). Always good: Boston - Third Stage. Tom Petty - Greatest Hits (remastered). Rush - Retrospective I (1974-1980). I have 3 free one's to pick - any requests? And any guesses what my favorite classic rock band is? Just by sheer numbers, my number 2 is either Moody Blues or Billy Joel, next is probably Supertramp. Anybody remember Head East? What about It's a Beautiful Day? |
March 13, 2009 JamesLG 420 posts | Shane: Russell Road is very nice. I like it now better than when it first opened. I think you may need to add either some Hendrix or Doors to the mix. Thanks again: James |
March 23, 2009 ShaneV Men's 55 393 posts | Called KZOK this morning and actually got on the air! Sent Arik an email offering KZOK & Bob Rivers Show the opportunity to participate in our event. Also emailed Music6000 in Lacey/Olympia. Keep your fingers crossed!!! |
March 25, 2009 Jawood Men's 50 943 posts | A great classic rock station down your way is 97.7, the eagle. They are closer to Lacey. |
March 25, 2009 Dbax Men's 65 2100 posts | ShaneV...I remember It's a Beautiful Day.......White Bird. Classic rock. |
March 26, 2009 BruceinGa Men's 70 3233 posts | ShaneV, How about a Who or ELO album as a prize! |
March 26, 2009 ShaneV Men's 55 393 posts | Got a call back from KZOK this morning! They are interested. May get on the air in April to talk about all you amazing guys and Senior Softball. May have to get some special permits and expand the tournament to 3-4 days! Jawood, used to listen to the eagle, got hooked on KZOK. Bob Rivers morning show is a hoot on my 40 mile comute (hey that rhymes!) Dbax, many remember White Bird but can never name the band. Pretty trippy stuff for a 15 year old! BruceinGA, just ordered 8 more cd's including The Who My Generation The Very Best of the Who. Also got Moody Blues Anthology and the remastered Days of Future Passed, AC/DC Back in Black remastered, Lynard Skynard Playlist (3 cd set) and Sammy Hagar Cosmic Universal Fashion. Thanks for following the post guys! Nobody has guessed my #1 Classic Rock Band yet (no teammates please)! ShaneV |
March 26, 2009 ShaneV Men's 55 393 posts | Update on the park: I cruised through the park again on Sunday and the grass is coming in good! It appears they've finished up the landscaping. Between the ballfields and the soccer fields there are a series of maybe 5-6 covered picnic areas (concrete) with bbq stands, really nice, all brand new. I can smell the steaks on the grill already! ShaneV |
March 29, 2009 JamesLG 420 posts | Hey Shane: Great lob putting this tourney together. Bob Rivers show is great to listen to on the way to work. They have a good mix of personalities. Do you have any Rolling Stones in the mix? Just got back from clam digging in Ocean Shoes and it was 39 degrees and never quit raining Saturday. This morning was much better but still cold. Thanks: James |
March 31, 2009 ShaneV Men's 55 393 posts | JamesLG, Possibilities ARE shaping up! Lacey Parks is on board and says most things we're considering are doable. Hope to hear more from KZOK soon. I'm hoping they can come by Russell Rd April 18-19 to see what SSUSA is all about. Also invited them to Lacey to see the new park. Funny, as much as I love classic rock, one would wonder why I do not have a single Stones or Beatles cd? And there are others in the top 100 or so not represented. The primary reason may be the sheer size, end to end, top to bottom, of classic rock. I have no 50's, little 60's, lots of 70's and a little 80's. Dave Dowell's collection, he tells me, is probably 10 times mine. Our pitcher Jimmie is an avid razor clam digger. I haven't been in years, but we're planning to go April 25-27. Shoot me an email sometime. ShaneV |
