March 13, 2009 WOW 197 posts | SSUSA recommended hotels Dave Did you ever get an answer about the "recommended host hotel" rates being higher than the general or "rack" rates? You mentioned that we should be getting cheaper not more EXPENSIVE rates. It would be best to let us all know via this board. Thanks |
March 17, 2009 WOW 197 posts | Dave Any news? |
March 17, 2009 hitt2 353 posts | WOW Where are you playing? If it is in St George go to Huntsman site they have a listing of hotels which are reasonable. |
March 17, 2009 4x4 Men's 65 601 posts | Also - go to Kayak.com for St. George on the 2nd turn off going east ST George St there are a lot of smaller hotels/motels with much more favorable rates than some of the bigger names. Kayak will show you a map - rates - pics - amenities - ratings - AAA approval, etc, avaiable. You can book without having to pay up front. I find it a useful tool for flights, hotels, cars. |
March 17, 2009 WOW 197 posts | I'm talking about the "special" rates we are supposed to get by going through SSUSA. My team was checking specifically for the upcoming Reno tourn. when we found the rates were NOT "special", they were higher. I informed Dave that we were being quoted higher rates going through them than if we just called on our own. He said he would have Fran check into this as this was not supposed to be happening, and let us know. I'm sure the correct rates will be coming soon. |
March 17, 2009 SoCal'er 76 posts | WOW Which specific hotel or hotels are you talking about in Reno.. I want to make sure if better rates are coming I want to make sure we get them. We have already reserved. |
March 17, 2009 WOW 197 posts | Most of my team stays at the Peppermill, and the Sands. I alerted Dave to the fact that SSUSA quoted rates were substantially higher than regular rates. |
March 18, 2009 BruceinGa Men's 70 3233 posts | Our team had made plans to stay at the Sands but after talking with Pete and Gary AND after my wife read the reviews on tripadvisor.com, my wife and I won't be staying there. The reviews also said that the Peppermill is located in a "less desirable" section of town. We considered the Atlantis and Silver Legacy ($) but decided on Circus Circus. Kayak.com has great prices! |
March 18, 2009 BruceinGa Men's 70 3233 posts | I just checked, the host hotel rate charged by the Sands is $220 for Thurs-Sunday. Kayak shows $216 for the same dates at the Sands. I guess you/your team makes out if 5 rooms are booked, then you get the discounted entry fee for the tournament. |
March 18, 2009 CRUSADERVB Men's 70 275 posts | WE HAVE 12 ROOMS AT THE GRAND SIERRA FOR $99 PER NIGHT. [GSF] |
March 18, 2009 BruceinGa Men's 70 3233 posts | I should have included that the prices are for Thurs-Sunday, checking out on Monday. |
March 18, 2009 Omar Khayyam 1357 posts | Keep looking through the discounters (Travelocity, Orbitz, etc.). I reserved Mon-Thurs (4 nights) for Reno at the Sands. Prices were up quite a bit from the past (new ownership). My quote was $200 for the four nights. Then I found a deal at the Atlantis for the same four nights for $125! Now we're talking. That's an individual rate, not a group rate. Made a new reservation. Room is likely minimal, but so are rooms at the Sands. I am happy at the Sands, but I don't take my wife there when she comes—too grubby and no guarantee of a non-smoking room. What were the rates that TH was quoting? |
March 18, 2009 BruceinGa Men's 70 3233 posts | (able to logon on the 5th attempt) Omar, go to the tournament page, click on Reno then click on details (I'm going by memory). It will display tournament info. The host hotels will be listed. Click on the link of each hotel to be taken to their rates. |
March 19, 2009 doker Men's 60 185 posts | THE RATES AT THE ATLANTIS RESORT ARE $59 FOR THURS AND SUN AND $89 FOR FRI AND SAT...THRU THE SSUSA SITE...GRAND SIERRA WAS AROUND $100/NIGHT AVERAGE...BUT THE HOTEL IS AWESOME...WE STAYED THERE IN 2007 FOR THE WESTERN NATL...AND THE ATLANTIS IS A MAJOR UPGRADE FROM THE SANDS AND CIRCUS CIRCUS....JUST INFO...DOKER |
March 19, 2009 Omar Khayyam 1357 posts | Thanks Bruce, I followed your directions and found the information. The rates quoted by SSUSA were in fact HIGHER than the rate I was able to obtain through Travelocity (and no doubt Orbitz and other website travel booking places). Not much higher, but still higher. Why wouldn't a tournament bringing hundreds (thousands) of people to Reno get a lower rate on their host hotel (these players are also diners and gamblers) than what I can get as a single searcher? Nonetheless, I'm staying at the Atlantis with the $31 per night rate charged by a different on-line source, Otel.com. |
March 19, 2009 Omar Khayyam 1357 posts | Forgot to add that the rate at the Atlantis of $59 per night is a very fair rate for the Tower rooms, especially if you are bringing your honey and want a quality upgrade on rooms and restaurants. It's about 5 minutes longer drive to Sparks than from the Sands. Stayed at the Atlantis last year in a tower room for an even lower rate since they were remodeling. |
March 24, 2009 WOW 197 posts | Atlantis and Peppermill are close to each other. THE PEPPERMILL IS NOT IN AN UNDESIREABLE AREA. In fact, it is one of the BEST if not THE best in Reno. Friendly staff, great food, absolutely awsome rooms. Feels like an upscale Vegas Strip Hotel. Downtown Reno, except for the Silver Legacy, is depressing. Too bad the SSUSA rates aren't special as advertised. |
