| Dec. 25, 2009 hitman Men's 70 339 posts | I was in the greater Pittsburgh area playin the the late 60's 70's and early 80's. The Pittsburgh Hard Hats had a lot of great players, although I wasn't one of them, I played against a lot of the players in tournaments and leagues. Big Tom Miller (Ford City) and Foxy Nelson (Apollo) were the two big ones. Big Tom went to Three Rivers Stadium and hit 19 out of 20 yard and was using one of the first aluminum bats made. The one with the wood handle and pop rivet end cap. Several of those went to the upper deck and those were the days before the good balls. Two others were brothers Johnny and Bill Sepich (sp?) and they could both play, one short Johnny and Billy pitched. Johnny had one of the best arms I ever played with or against as a Shortstop, he played about 6-10 steps in the grass and had a rocket release. Just wonder how far these guys would hit it today with the GOOD BALLS & BATS? Big Tom hit many that were in the 500ft category. These were probably the guys that would the Long Haul Bombers of yesteryear. AHHHHHHH the old memories!!!!!!! God Bless, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. The Hitman #13 |

There were a number of players that played for Marones ( spelling?)that team won a few worlds. As far as I know not many of them playing now. The only ones I know of is Lou Abel and Jimmy Jones and they now play for HMRs 60s.Merry Christmas to all. Harry Westwood |

| Dec. 25, 2009 hitman Men's 70 339 posts | I played against the Hard Hats and Jim's Sport Shop. Tom and Foxy were teamates on another local team we played for (Joe's ARMY/NAVY). Frank Thomas former Pittsburgh Pirate and New York Met was on Jim's and he had the largest hands of any man I ever shook hands with. Frank was around a .900 hitter but he only hit singles. Dirty, I'm sure I played against Lou just can't remember where now. Do you remember Big Tom and Foxy? My 2009 60+ team was EXPRESS and my 2010 60+ team is GA/AL MASTERS. The Hitman #13 |

| Dec. 25, 2009 curveball Men's 65 705 posts | Played against several of these West Coast teams a lot in the 60's and 70's while playing for Henry Fords/Pizza Baron out of Portland OR. "The Wood", on this website, was with Capital Insulation, he played against a lot of these guys also. Charlie Waible from Fords and Joe Mesa both play for Ruth Realty, 60 Major Plus. I play for Bickerton(So. Cal) 65 Major, and Top Gun 60's, 60 Major Plus. We're the only ones playing from that era. Lots of the 80's teams have guys playing all over the west. A few of the Campbell Carpets guys are still playing also. |

| Dec. 26, 2009 jimjoes-gman Men's 55 80 posts | I introduced Doug Gerdes to a pitch in the USSSA Major Industrial in 1976 at Dearborn MI.Ford Motor Complex.He calmly hit it over the rt.ctr.fence.That shot put us in the losers bracket first game.We won 7 in a row to finish 4th at 7-2.(60 teams)....We played against "Mighty" Joe Young 5 yrs ago in NSA Senior in Gadsden Ala.He murdered the ball.He said he has a kot of back problems & probably would not be playing Senior Ball anymore..."Big" Miller (Pittsburg)-one of the biggest guys I have ever faced on a softball field.....Who remembers Don Ardnt & Mike Parrott? I have heard they have passed on.They were 2 amazingly deceiveingly built guys that could hittem over the light poles.I doubt if either one of them ever lifted weights. God bless their souls. |

| Dec. 26, 2009 Dirty Men's 50 1371 posts | That is what I remember most about him. He would throw handfulls of dirt at the plate. Even throw his glove on ocasion to guys like Galloway. Dick McIntyre from Connecticut was very similar in that era, but just not on quite as good of a team. No doubt those two influenced me the most. |

Played againt Young in the early 80s, I remember him saying he did not take much BP because all taking too much does is give you the opportunity to create bad habits. Do what you came to do, and get out of the box. Makes some sense, and clearly worked for him. |

I've never been introduced to him but I've played in Boone's tournament in the spring of 2007 and Ricky was playing with the Major players. He's a little over weight (who isn't?) but is still in prett good shape. I'm really surprised not to see him playing senior ball. Audie may know more about him. |

I played with Lawrence "Boom Boom" Hutcherson in the early 80s. He was the East Coast Bombat guy in those days. Hutch still plays with Clatt on Turn 2. I haven't seen Mike Nye in years. If he still played, it would probably be with Ed Rose and the Florida boys. Of course, Terry Perryman of the Nelson Paint teams still plays. Terry is with Texas Legends 65s. John Tercheria (Campbells Carpets) was still playing with Old A's until this past year. John had hip replacement and I don't know if he'll play again. John Davide (Pepsico) still plays with Conneticut Sportsplex (Thermco). Harry Westwood, my friend, I hope all is well. I miss you Virginia guys. Larry Lopez |

We had some barn burners with them. I also played against them a lot in the younger days. I believe their coach was a big guy we called Maroadi Joe. |

Schlitz guys are still playing, Paul wenzel & Derek Gallager with Handling flooring, Arlis Jones is playing for a WI. team, Kenny Parker died, John Lilly & Ron Olesiak had boughts with cancer. Rick Scheer is still working for Howards, Joe Young was one of my roommates when he was with Lilly, he's probably still selling spikes out of his trunk! Phil Higgens is just playing league ball, he fills in on Wenzel's team for the Milw. tournaments. Mike Nye,Bill Scillian & Dave Steffan all quit to coach their kids. Dennis Graser and Rick Weiterman still live in Milw, but I beleive they just play in leagues. Benny Holt still lives in Chicago, probably in the witness protection program somewhere. Dick Laba just golfs.I still play and pitch for GSF with Bob Woodroof[Capital Insulation] |

Played with Doug Gerdes in Dearborn, Mi. for years. Butch17 I know I played against you several times. Had a battle with Maroadis for a championship in the 45, lost by 1 run. |

Other County Sports players John Davide now with Turn Two, Gary Richter with Thermco. Lou Russo retired still living in the Bronx. Bob Sugerman and Bill Malloy playing senior league on Long Island. Sam Sapienza NY Statesmen founder and tremendous pitcher. |

| Dec. 27, 2009 BruceinGa Men's 70 3233 posts | Dirty, ease up! We all know what starburst meant. The same happened to me when our team, Rehoboth, played Thompson Sporting Goods in the mid 80's. One of their batters tommahawked a high pitch and it has so much backspin that it also appeared to never get over 10'. Maybe it was 20 or 25 but by stating that it never got over 10 just emphasized how long it stayed up and how impressed we were of the swing. |

There have been a few times I have seen an infielder actually jump for a ball that went over the fence. Back when we had the t-4000 balls I was playing for Chromalloy/Shallow Waterbeds/Miller Lite from Lubbock and had the pleasure of playing with Dudley Copeland. Pound for pound he was the strongest hitter I ever saw. He hit balls that I still believe rose over the fence like a well driven golf ball. Also, does anyone remember Mike Cellura? or Don Whittingham? or Elby Boom-Boom Bashong? They could hit a little (lol). Thanks for the trip through memory lane. |

I remember the last 35+ ASA National we won before X-Ray broke up was against you guys in 1996. Then, y'all beat us in the 40+ later that year. That was also my first year playing Senior ball. Mr. Manassas was our primary pitcher. I also remember when y'all knocked us out of the Final 4 in Rochester Hills in 1992 in the 35+ ASA. I'm playing 60s now for the last year and ready to move up to 65s (I'm an "old" dude)! Hope to see you down the road. |

We way over achieved in the Nationals in Jacksonville (believe it was 1971) by beating County Sports, Copper Hearth and Greenbelt Shell in our first 3 games before losing to Triton Club (Wichita) in a rain storm ending about 1 AM in the morning. Then got beat by Warren Motors. Finishied 6th which was the highest ever for a Northwest Team at the time. Later played with New Era Die and York Barbell out of York PA playing in 4 more worlds. We had a great hitter in Greg (baby bull) Furman. Greg passed away at a fairly young age after an impressive career in slowpitch. The old National Slowpitch Conference was a lot of fun while it lasted. Great times, great memories |

| Dec. 28, 2009 ju25 Men's 60 236 posts | Heres a list of Michigan Hall Of Famers whom I presently either play with or against; Doug Gerdes,Bobby Stewart,Darwin Dillard,Danny Parker,Tommy Hamilton,Larry Reedus,Carl Parrish,Eddie Karas,Mark Matchulat,and last but certainly not least Class of 2010 Dave (Stick) Mossioun. Congrats stick, you are a classy ballplayer and even a classier person. Most of these fellows are still tearing it up on the Senior Circuit. |

He hit one in Albuquerque on a baseball field that almost cleared a 6 lane road after leaving a 345 fence behind. I think it has been orbiting now for 30 years!lol I think he was playing for Capitol Insulation then. I am getting old-forgive if the memories are not exactly accurate. |

Thats what the senior circuit is all about remembering all the old times and friendships we established with teams over all these years. |

| Dec. 28, 2009 jimjoes-gman Men's 55 80 posts | JLD930-I think the Pile Drivers from Virginia Beach won the 1971 ASA Nat'l.You guys did a heck of a job in that tourney finishing 6th....do you remember seeing Bill Gatti his team JIFFY CLUB? 4th or 5th.Bill was 13-15 9 hrs......JIFFY CLUB came back the following year 1972 & won ASA MAJOR...But something very interesting happened when the awards were handed out.After the All American team was named ,everyone was anxiously waiting to hear who would be the MVP. Everyone thought it would be a toss - up between BILL GATTI (20-28,12 hrs&28 rbi's)and COBBIE HARRISON ,both of JIFFY. Cobbie went an amazing (29-32 with 13 hrs&22 rbi's). Every body was tense until the announcer said "and now for the MVP of the 1972 ASA Mens Major,Don Arndt of the HOWARDS FURNITURE"....HOWARDS FINISHED 3rd.Bless his soul & I know he played great,but no one could ever figure that one out. |

Rec leagues are Remax (50+ Dearborn) competition includes Stick, Bobby Stewart, Eddie Karas,Larry Reedus & Dar Dillard. 35+ Ford league at Rotunda fields in Dearborn Team is the Sun Devils. Play with Carl Parrish and against Doug Gerdes and Eddie Karas. Also play in a 55+ Can Am morning league for Rush Trucking against Danny Parker, Tommy Hamilton, Gordie Ferguson and Darwin Dillard. Used to play for Walsh's on the border, New Place Lounge and Remax in 40+ ball. |

BUT, the minimum age is 43 so I'm spotting some of those young guys 20 years! I can still hit it pretty good but I'm in the infield most of the time now. Still love the game though! |

| Dec. 29, 2009 Webbie25 Men's 70 2414 posts | In 'batting' around the idea of the Worth T-4000 softball, I googled it and immediately came up with an SI aricle dated September 27, 1982 talking about the 'New Hot Softballs'. It is almost eerie about the concerns, especially to the pitchers then, and that was not senior ball. They also talked about length of games and run prduction. They also mention the 'Hot Dot' and the TN-Poly. Butch, I agree it hit like a golf ball (lol). I know I was hitting 250-300 Hrs in 150 games back then.It was fun, but the scores! We (Shallow Waterbeds/Fluid Engineering/Miller Lite from Lubbock) beat Black Walnut from Missouri once 57-42 in 5 innings-called by run rule. In the Bottom of the 5th, Dudley Copeland and I both made diving catches in the outfield to make the 15 run lead stand up and we walked off shaking hands to comments like 'your defense beat us!' No telling where that one would have ended up if we would have played 7 innnings. That 15 run lead sure didn't feel safe and it sure wasn't 'mercy' to them-they knew they had a chance to come back. |

I believe Bert Smith was still playing with them at the time and I thought he may have been MVP. I was fortunate to make the all tourney team that year but had a few too many beers when they announced the team so don't remember who was MVP. I am surprised it is Arndt. I will have to check the scrapbook sometime. Who were you playing with? You seem to know all the teams from that era. |

I still see alot of the Virginia Pets and Capitol Xray guys at some tourneys. Playing 60's now. look forward to seeing you all this season, great post brings back alot of memories. |

Yes, Bert Smith was with the VA team & MVP 1971.....In 1972 Ardnt & Bill Gatti both had almost identical batting avgs ,while Cobbie Harrison outhit both of them 29-32.Ardnt got MVP while playing on the 3rd plce team...Bill still looks good & can hit the ball,he is about 57 but does not play anymore.No JIFFY players play Senior Softball. |

Big Paul Tomasevich.. He could hit with the best of the guys back then using the wood bats.. they're both where they belong in the ASA HOF.. the balls he hit out ouf McGee field in the Burgh may well be still traveling.. Jimmy Messmer was ss on Marodi's team.. he was a great player in his day also.. The Snatchko bros. out of the Burgh were pretty good players of their time, doubt if any of them ever played senior ball, maybe Roger Snatchko did ???? |

I remember playing against the Pittsburgh team the Snatchkos were on back in the early 70's ('72). We (Federal Wrecking out of Cabin John, MD) played in an East Coast travelling league. Other teams that I can remember were from Pittsburg, York and Connecticut. Those weekend two games on Saturday and two more on Sunday were a lot of fun. I had just started using metal bats back then. Those were the days when only the team that won the Regionals went to the ASA Nationals. Unfortunately for us, that was Greenbelt Shell. |

| Dec. 30, 2009 Lecak Men's 60 1026 posts | Vinny help a fellow Pittsburgher out, I moved to Southern California before I was 21 but while in high school I played at the Mifflin Club was told years later that some of the Maroadi's guys may have played there also they were called the Mifflin Maroadi's as I recall. I got asked to play for the US Steel team I was going to work in their parts department. I took a vacation to Southern California prior to starting the job and never came back to Pittsburgh. I never really followed up with anyone about that I was told that the team was industrial and traveled all over to play teams like Sikorsky and some of the Detroit industrial teams. Always wondered what I missed what do you know about the US Steel team if anything wonder if anyone from that team is playing senior ball. |

He's been diagnosed with "suspected carcinoma" colon cancer. He's scheduled for a second colonoscopy Jan. 4 and surgery to remove the tumor Jan. 8. The first colonoscopy wasn't 100% conclusive, so his surgeon wants another to determine whether it's a malignant or benign tumor before he removes it. Please rememeber us in your prayers. |

He stayed in touch with my family up until the end.I am living in Springfield Va. I played for Northern Va. Force 55AAA and we just got moved up to Major.and 60s for VA Cavaliers AAA. The force team is going 60s next year. They are still playing ball at the Mifflin club the guys that play on HMRs 60 still play there.I do not know anything. about the Steels team. One of the Snatchko brothers is supposed to play for HMR 60s next year is what I have heard.Happy New Year to All, Harry |

I remember being up on that hill overlooking the river valley and hearing those furnaces let loose shook the valley. I played with some guys from Homestead. I remember playing with the Braszo brothers Ray was a local legend because he ended up playing some with the Superbowl Steelers. I remember John Defenbaugh I think I got that right strong lefty hitter. I remember traveling with a team from the Mifflin Club to Long Island (Jones Beach) still a baby and seeing the ocean for the first time, getting thrown out of a game for wiping out a catcher and drinking and carousing. Do you remember West Field in Homestead? That was some ballpark the pro softball team played there. |

Getting to play a few games with him and my good buddy Chico was one of the highlights of the year. Larry really lit it up in the two tourneys I was there. The Dallas tourney had a lot of the great hitters in attendance and Larry absolutely was the "man". He is still in great shape and can play defense too. He can win this battle if anyone can. Becky, although I don't know Larry personally, I've played against a lot of guys who know him, they all said what a great one his is. Life has a strange way of presenting us with challenges, lots of times when we least expect it. As in the past, Larry will take this challenge head on and will come out on top. He's a fighter, those are the guys that beat this horrific desease. We have included him in our prayers, and thoughts for a speedy recovery. |

| Jan. 1, 2010 hitman Men's 70 339 posts | I lived in Leechburg Pa. and played Ford City league to East Brady. Also played in Lower Burrell, SOKOL Camp which was a private club with a softball field. They were one of the 1st (maybe only)to have closed circuit TV to watch a game while getting tuned (hydrated) for your game. Does anyone remember having to buy all uniforms ,balls, etc from the guy who ran the league? Played an annual game against the Steelers at SOKOL and in one Tom Banasak struck out and everyone laughed, next time up he hit a rope that knocked a hole in the playwood fence and said now laugh!!!!!!!!! Did anyone every play at Oliver high school in Pittsburgh, there was no grass and it was also the football field to keep dust down they sprayed used oil on the field and if it sprinkled you ended up looking like a grease monkeys rag if you hit the ground. Also a sign at the field said "NO SOL MINTZ PLAYERS ALLOWED". Also played against Jim Kelly and his team made up of his brothers, remember Jim didn't have a strong arm by Pro Football standards but I saw him throw a PiSS rope in East Brady from the fence to a strike at the plate to get a runner out and he was only a Jr. in high school. I moved to MD in the late 70s.I pretty sure that there was a sign way up on the hill where Galloway had hit a ball once. Wanted to move back and play there after I discovered the liquid refreshment stand. The Only thing that I remember about Homestead was the High Level bridge connecting Squirrel Hill with Homestead. I grew up in Long Island, moved to Norristown, PA outside of Philly when I was in High School and just turned 51 and remmeber when I was little, we'd go to Jones Beach in laet 60's, I was around 10 and met Bert Smith and Jimmy Galloway, they were friends of my dad. I talked to both of them on the phone a couple of years ago, still great guys. - There are still a lot of guys that belong in the ASA National Hall of Fame that nobody has nominated yet. I'd do it, but you have to live in that state and be a commissioner (we just got Mike Shenk elected for induction and he will go in next Nov.) But the commissioners from Alabama, Georgie, Florida should try to at least nominate Craig Elliott, Charles Wright, Dirk Androff and Mike Nye. They belong with the greats. | Jan. 31, 2010 jim16 Men's 65 180 posts | I just recd an update on Larry Fredieu. Larry's biopsy was positive, he underwent colon surgery and doctors say they fell they got it all. Approximately 11 inches was removed and the outlook is very positive. Larry will undergo chemo to be sure its all gone and radiation is also possible. So, it was bad news and good news and if anyone can totally beat it, its Larry. He has a wonderful loving family and has so many friends including the softball community who are praying for him. He is truly blessed. Becky, I spoke with Chico and he shared this with me. |

Tournaments many times & went to the Conway Twitty to follow Starpath or anywhere else they were playing if it was convenient....Any one remember Joey Raby ? He used to amaze me because he was about 6' tall & about 170 & could hit the ball as far as the large guys.How about Clemente's out of N Carolina.They had a pitcher that did all kinds of antics.He had a "laughing box" in his back pocket that he would engage while the pitch was on its way to the batter.Then,he had some Dr Spock ears that he would wear while pitching.And he would stand on 2nd & run toward the mound,do a flip land back on his feet & release the ball.I dont know what his name was. |

I wouldn't say that he could it as far as the big guys but he did hit HRs. I believe that the pitcher you mention was/is Bob Lorria, who also pitched for some Michigan teams. We played him in Petersburg, VA, in 82. Our catcher hit him in the chest with a line drive... on a 'no pitch'... he wasn't real popular with other teams but he was a showman. Bob Woodroof |

| Feb. 2, 2010 butch17 Men's 55 412 posts | One of the teams Bobby Lorria pitched for was Lansing Glass and either him or his wife would scout the next team to play and chart pitches(location), what pitch the hitter hit or let go, where each hitter hit and keep a copy in his back pocket for reference. He did some crazy things on the mound. Run at hitters, talk to them, light his glove on fire, crazy hats, somersaults and on and on. |

Boyette hit 2nd I believe... Dave Carroll hit last. But then I forgot that Joey Raby played outfield, too. Butch: Lorria's cousin played with us in CA (Bruce Loria)... yes, they spelled it differently... they were nothing alike. We only saw him the one time (Bob) and he was playing for a team called Southwestern (MI) if I'm not mistaken... he would approach the hitter and read off his stats so somebody had to be scouting for him. Call me old fashion but I liked the style of Buddy Slater, Ricky Pinto, Don Arndt, Mike Parrot, Chuck Drewitz, Mickey McCarty, and such more than Lorria... even Gordon Wheeler from Campbell Carpets. But Lorria did have a pattern of success... not as great as Slater, Arndt and Pinto though. BW |

He lives just outside San Antonio and was part of the Texas Connection, Bill Ferguson, Micke McCarty, Dick Bartel, Richard Willborn and Billy Blake, all from around San Antonio. |

We're from the same area but I only knew him casually because he was an A-Major player whereas I was just a scrub class C player. One day after his team (Glass out of Indiana) thoroughly smashed our team in a local major tournament he called me over to show me something. He pulled out a file on me!! It was finitely detailed about how I hit in certain situations, where I hit to, what I do with runenrs on base, etc etc. I couldn't believe an A-Major pitcher like him would even bother to chart a scrub like me!! And he showed me even more detailed files on every player he ever played against!! The man should have been a major league baseball scout. |

| Aug. 28, 2011 sjuhoops 145 posts | chulodanny44 I played for NY Clippers for that one year. If memory serves me correctly(very questionable)our franchise did not draw many spectators. Sometime during that year some players decided to leave and jumped to other teams. I believe a team call Jet Trophy's filled in to finish out the season. Some of us stayed and finished out the year. We did play at the Mt. Vernon stadium. I still have a NY Clipper banner thanks to Ron Danoski who played for Milwalkee. I may have some of the uniform shirts still packed away but I am not positive. Did a relative of yours play on that team? Most of the original team were from Long Island. I know Lou Russo was from the Bronx. Not sure of any others. Not sure if you follow college hoops or not but my brother is head coach at Iona. Hope this helps. Hank Cluess |

I was curious as to how somebody would break into big time travel softball and what kind of money did you guys make playin? What was it like To play at Mt Vernon stadium was it run down back then? What was Joe Galloway like? |

| Aug. 28, 2011 sjuhoops 145 posts | Mr. Galloway was actually Jim. He was one of the nicest guys on the planet. I started playing with him towards the end of his career. He was the best all around player I played with. Great home run hitter, great line drive hitter and could play anywhere you needed him. Always a gentleman. As far as salary if I remember we made a few hundred on the weekends and our transportation and rooms was covered when we went on the road. I have no idea about big time travel at this time. There is a young man who lives here in Vegas that does play big time. He may have his own web site. Try Denny Crine. I know he is sponsored by Miken and has his own model bat. Mt. Vernon was very old at that time. We could never figure out why they played there as I said before most of us were from the island. We always thought Jones Beach would have been ideal. | Aug. 29, 2011 Pricer Men's 50 621 posts | Michigan based class A teams from yesteryear, Synders, Clementes, Southwestern Industries, Miller Of Redford, Miller of Warren, Herc's, Trailblazers to name a few. Class A states had 30 plus teams back then. I don't think they have 30 nationwide right now. |
