Cheap awards given out in Reno
This past weekend my wife played in that over rated Rockin Reno Tournament, Her team place 2nd in the Women 50's. They were given Tanel 360 sun visors. Sun Visors,
$4.99 sun visors. They were CHEAP. What was the total cost? Lets see, 15 hats x $4.99 = $74.85 Total. Less than $100.00 .Oh But they were donated By..... Tanel. Now this is what it cost each player to be there. First of all each player paid their own way. $250.00 air fare, $250.00/2 Hotel, $50.00 Meals x 3.5 days total. Rental Car $200.00/4.... Total about $600.00 ea. on top of Tips and Gambling. PLUS ENTRY FEE. We play in local leagues and get awards that put this S*?T to shame. I remember when the fees were lower and the Awards were plenty. Beleive it THEY WON'T BE BACK NEXT YEAR. We'll keep that $ 9,000 in our pockets. What a Joke!

Yeah does seam a little cheap; but we're not pros. From your description it sounds like you guys had a lot of fun. Any vacation to a place like this is going to cost $$.

Its always been my feeling that we go to the bigger tourneys for the competion, not the awards. You can stay home and play the same teams week after week, but to truly test your team you have to attend the larger more recognized tourneys.
We lost our asses and still had a great time playing the best teams in the country. In my mind thats what its all about.

E4 is right, if you are playing for the awards, stop playing right now.
This is a game a bragging rights, not visors......there is only one thing that i want when I go to the big tourneys, to win it.

canjack,
I don't know where you got a $4.99 price tag on those visors, but they costs $12.99 each !
Why should second place get something nice for coming in "second place" ?

Cameraderie, competition, and pride come before recognition (awards) for most. Some still pursue the "ring record", which is all right, too.

wagon your statement is a contradiction,if your not going for awards, why do you care if you win it.just play some games and go home.why is there a senior softball HOF for individuals.no need to have that if we are just playing for fun.

#6 that might be the retail on those, but we all know that ssusa gets them cheaper if not free,as tanel is a sponsor.

sad puppy, we play to win the game!
not just to get some games in. HOF is icing on the cake. I don't need a visor, tee shirt, bag or medal. Just give me the championship.

Wagon, This is really going to hurt but I agree with you. There is nothing like winning. Awards are nice but they always end up collecting dust or in the garage. It is nice to get something in return but nothing like winning. Thanks Harry

HOF within the different assn's, have along with it different 'meanings' or how they 'earned' it. Not all are equal.
Some assn's also have money rewards for the team in good amounts or even free passes to another event. I like those.
One could say it's a 'thank you' for participating, a job well done. ..... We appreciate your money to keep us going.

I say keep the awards and lower the tournament cost, or provide a reasonable dollar credit towards future events. Tournament cost continue to increase at a disproportional rate, but again we don't have to go/play.

wagon hate to see you have to resort to name calling like your friends joey and dirty.
the point is that we as players spend a lot of money and get nothing in return for our efforts and money.depending on how far we have to travel we can spend upwards of $1000 for a tourney(air, hotel, food, rental car and such).why should we get something in return.i play with the kids a lot and can spend $25-50 for a tourney and they'll give something down to 4th place, and not something real cheap.
the way you guys put it we don't need the awards or anything as long as you win the tourney, yeah right.i think it would really PO you if travel 1000 miles 1 way and got nothing for it,but bragging rights.
sweet p the prol is there is no other game in town for seniors to play in,we have 2 major assoc, along with huntsman games(1 tourney a yr).

Come play SCSSA, Donnie is giving cash awards for 1st place teams and a bonus for the most tourneys won for the year.
If I'm not mistaken its $175.00 for each tourney won and something like 1200.00 for the most tourneys won in a year. Dont quote me on this, ask Donnie @ SCSSA.
Not bad for a local Assoc.

How about playing on the coast in Santa Maria, Morro Bay with awards a plenty and a working TD on sight at all times to talk to. Not only competitive brackets but a very good bang for you buck. There are other locations just look at eteamz.com/mensfpc/news/

Harry, it wasn't that hard to agree with me:)
I have seven national championships (real ones) and I got the following, a pullover from ASA, ring from SSWS (which was nice) and a couple of medals. That's it. SPA didn't give us anything. I'm happy just to get that. What makes me most happiest is saying that I've won 7 nationals.

wagon congrats on your winnings.it is nice to receive something for the money we pay out,if we win, whether we travel 50 miles or 1500 miles.tourney fees are sky hi now,gas to travel, hotels, food, hell qualifiers are well over $300,this makes for an expensive time for nothing.i have won titles also(not as many as you)and all i got was a bat bag that was the same as the one being sold at the souvenir stand, with nothing on it to say we had won.now the pullovers(for other wins) i got did say we had won,of course we had to wait for them.until lately you had to pay for any ring you got.
i also not just saying ssusa does this, they all do.

COME ON MADDOG....WE DON'T NEED REWARDS! JUST PLAYING AND WINNING AGAINST GOOD COMPETITION AT OUR AGE IS AWARD ENOUGH!!!! YES WE SPEND LOTS OF DOUGH PLAYING FAR AWAY...BUT WE CHOOSE TO DO SO!! SO WE CAN PLAY THE BEST IN OUR CATEGORY AND SPEND SOME TIME WITH OUR BUDDIES AT THE SAME TIME!!! IF WE DIDN'T HAVE THE MONEY WE WOULDN'T TRAVEL TO THESE GREAT TOURNAMENTS.....ANYONE WHO HASN'T GONE TO RENO AND PLAYED ON GOLDEN EAGLE IS REALLY MISSING OUT!!!!!...THE TOURNAMENT WAS RUN EXCELLENTLY (EVEN THOUGH WE DIDN'T PLAY WELL) AND WE HAD A LOT OF FUN!!!! DAVE,FRAN AND TERRY DO ALL THEY CAN TO MAKE THESE TOURNEYS HAPPEN AND I FOR ONE TOTALLY APPRECIATE ALL THEY DO. PLAYING IN THEM IS THE WHOLE THING, NOT AWARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DOKER

For those who expect awards, try this. Dont go in with any expectations, then when you get an award of any kind you will feel loved.

For me if I want an award or surprise I'll buy my own Kracker Jacks.

Sounds like some guys think winning championships and getting nice awards are mutually exclusive. Why can't there be both?

hey guys tell the ones who have rings and put them on their fingers to flash at everyone, why.i seen guys rub it in with this.
yes we play for fun,but we like a little recognition for what we have done if we win(most every tourney i have ever played (excepting senior)in has had decent prizes down to 3rd place) .
why can't these assoc let us play for a cheaper price, instead of $600+ for entry fees for nationals, and well over $300 for just qualifier's.

Bob, you and I agree on most issues that confront Senior Softball, But this one I take the other side.

As for the entry fees, SSUSA is the big boy on the block, who else can or will give us the chance to play against the very best, week after week, month after month. When you supply something thats this much better it will always cost more. Plus the costs of most everything have gone up since we started playing our game.

Remember when gas was 50 or 60 cents a gallon? Mcdonalds burger was 20 cents.
All the costs of living in the greatest country on earth and under the best free market system on the planet have been raised.

Joe talks about people with self interest all the time. Hell we all have our self interests. You and I and many others want a cooler game. Joe and the "majority" want it smoking hot.
All self interest on both sides. Both are right.

Our recognition comes in many ways other then prizes or awards. It comes from the best places possible, our peers.

we'll use.

E4/E6 that's the problem,we don't get to see these teams but once a year, maybe twice.i don't know about your $, but most everyone in know can't be putting out $1k for every tourney.cali is in a different boat as most all the big tourney's are within easy driving distance(usually less than 8 hrs max, more like 4-5 hrs).anything east of az,nm really have some long travel distances and have to fly.
how about ssusa cutting back a little on some staff at tourney's.
like i said i had never been to a tourney that give out something down to 3rd beofre senior ball.yes we can get some self gratifation, but a nice shirt, pullover saying that we have won would be real nice.
the problem i see with just bragging rights,is who really knows but the 2 or 3 last teams in a tourney.if you happen to change teams that goes out the window as you really (and i hate to say it this way)no proof that you did it unless you become a bragger and tell people ,and we all know nobody likes a bragger.we all like to wear a shirt, ring for our time on the field for winning a title.
i do understand where you all are coming from about the comradeship and such,but.... hey lets give a little recognition to the winners with something nice, hey second to me deserves something also.just my thoughts and not gonna commit hari-kari over it tho.just come to know that a whole lot is not coming if we happen to win.

John.
Lively and hot is different than smoking hot.
I like smoking hot just like most of us do but it's not absolutely necessary.
Lively/hot is necessary
and fundamental to our game.
It's that simple.
This movement and it's drivers
want us go well below what lively is
and that's NOT acceptable.
Further, with screens, protective equipment and/or waivers
I'm sure we can survive
and our game will survive
in some meaningful form.
I'm fed up like most with all the tampering with our game,
don't see the reason for changing
what we been doing since we was babies,
and won't be herded, scared or intimidated into bending over to accommodate those who's ignorance and
self interest don't allow them
to represent the whole of us
and our experience.
Lively bats and balls mark
our game, now and forever.
