Hi Mad Dog,

I was more than pleasantly surprised. I was just hoping to make it to Sunday and go from there. I was watching the game before the finals between 2 outstanding teams, Master Collision and KC Kids. Both teams looked very tired in the field especially KC Kids who were playing their 4th game of the day. KC Kids did not look tired hitting though, averaging about 30 runs per game over that 4 game span. I looked over at one of my players watching the game and said you know our team theory about scoring 25 runs and you will probably win, well I said against KC Kids, we will need to increase that to 35 runs somehow. LOL! I will honestly say that a fresh and rested KC Kids team may have possibly double-dipped us in the finals, or even some of the other teams in our bracket. I am just in disbelief that we won and very thrilled! Everyone on our team is still shaking their heads.

In my youger days, I was brought up that their is only one winner. That is so far from the truth. In this past tournament, everyone is a winner for being able to participate, especially at our age. When I was in my 20's, I thought I would be more than fortunate to keep playing till I was 40, and now here I am playing at 60.

When I was helping coach my daughter's teams, one coach really said it right, and has become my philosphy from that day forward. This relates especially to the SSUSA "TOC" tournaments and my daughter's teams really having to qualify to attend the tournament. The coach sat the girls down and simply said, "only one team out of these 50 teams is going to actually achieve first place in this tournament, but each and every team is a winner, by just qualifying to get here. He said do not set yourself up for failure, because you have already achieved success." Thanks Steve!!

Congrats to all of the teams in all of the divisions. Congrats to my team mates for a job well done. Carlos, you were phenominal this weekend!

Nobody mentioned the field maintenance at Desert West. It was the best that I’ve seen at any tournament run by SSUSA (dragged and watered after every game). The outfield grass was trimmed just right, and even the batters boxes were kept in great shape. I only saw one random bad hop, and that was in our championship game. Desert West used to be a dump, but things have sure changed. Great job ground crew.

To the whole Double Edge team, congratulations on a great win in a bigger than expected bracket.
Pushin60, I agree with you about the fields; they were in great shape. Overall things were good but I'm sure those of you who played under the lights found them to be poor at best and the cooling elements for the water fountains in the dugouts didn't work for the most part so ice water should have been in all of the dugouts. I talked to Fran Sunday morning and she indicated the city has received a grant to redo the lights completely so they should be better by next year.

Again, congratulations to the winners and to everyone else able to play in this tournament. Well said, Andy.

Congratulations to Double Edge on their victory. John (OTE# 24) from that team it was nice to see you in much warmer weather than we had at the TOC. Good Job I hope we get to see you guys at the TOC in 2011. We made to to Sunday but not for long. Greg, it was nice to meet you and your teammates a class act. Did not enjoy the beating in the East West game that you put on us. Larry L. always a pleasure talking to you and thanks for the kind words. Greg and John, We owe a lot of how we did to the competition we played this year. Playing teams like Master Collision,KC Kids,NorCal Merchants,
Minn Masters,Texas 60s in Reno and

competition and friends. Thanks again for the kind words.

To Andy, and everyone on Double Edge. Yes, we had been scoring a few runs in our games (prior to our championship game with you).....averaging 29 per game. Guess we should have saved a few of them for you guys, huh. I'm sorry we couldn't give you guys a better game. I honestly feel there were a few factors that played into our letdown. It seems as though we were setting goals for ourselves throughout the double-elimination portion of the tournament. Palm Springs Heat had beaten us in pool play....we had the opportunity to play them again in double-elim, and beat them. Minnesota Prize had beaten us earlier in the year at another tournament, so we wanted to take care of them, and did so when we met them in double-elim also. We played Bay State Bombers in the very 1st game of the double-elimination portion of this tournament. They are the ones that set the stage for our long treck by putting us in the loser's bracket in that very 1st game....so we wanted to avenge that loss, which we did. Then we had our sites set on Master Collision, because they double-dipped us back in the Rock-n-Reno tournament's championship games earler this year.....that mission was accomplished. At that point we had just finished our 4th back-to-back game on Sunday, and the championship lay ahead of us. I honestly feel my guys had been "getting up" for each-and-every game up to that point, and had simply given all they had to get there. They had climbed one mountain after another (playing a total of 10 games up to that point), and as much as we all wanted to win 2 more, it was just too much for them to make it through another game. We simply ran out of gas!!!! Sorry.

All this being said, however, I do not want to take anything away from the way you guys played. You are very strong defensively (I feel you played GREAT fundamental ball).....and played "smart" defense. We got only a couple of balls past your pitcher, nothing past your 3rd baseman, etc. You are also solid offensively. I simply wish we could have given you better competition.

Congratulations !!!!!.....and good luck in the Major+, if you guys stay together and go that route.

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for all of the kind words and nice comments. Clint, no sorry's needed, you just ran out of gas, like you stated. We would have been sorry, if you did not run out of gas. You played a lot of games this past weekend.

Our team is not quite sure what we are going to do next season. We are getting together some time in the next 2 months to discuss this. We have to skip the Winter Worlds, due to 4 players being injured, and 2-3 of them may need some surgery. This new bordering rule has handcuffed us for next season too. We had 2 players lined up for next season, that are bordering California. We have 1-3 players that may retire in a bordering state. Our coach will be residing in Nevada beginning November. No one else wants to coach this team.

Our current team was formed in Phoenix last year from a combination of 4 teams. We did well from the beginning, but could not get over the hump to win a big tournament, and now we did. This bordering rule is really a dilemna for our team, and many other teams.

If we disband, some of us may not play at all, some go to other teams, and a few go play with some friends on a 55 team. I have many friends that are not old enough to play 60's yet. They are all 1-2 years away, and then we can reform and play 60's again. I really just do not know at this time. I will just have to wait till our team gets together to discuss this issue. If we disband, then what better way to go out, than by winning the Phoenux Worlds. Great job guys! Besides being a scrappy bunch of ballplayers, Double Edge was comprised of some really nice guys, that I was hoping to play another season of softball. I have enjoyed the team gatherings at countless times at the BBQ's, including 2 this weekend in Phoenix.

Pray that everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving and a safe one with your families!

I'd like to not only congratulate all the winning teams in each division, but also all the teams and the players who put forth their efforts, energy and the training to be able to compete in a tournament like this one. I'm sure there are many personal stories and goals that were achieved.

I was very thankful to be able to play with our Scrap Iron-Phiten AAA 60's team after experiencing 38 days of radiation just 3 days prior to the tournament. Thanks to my coach and my teammates for your cooperation and support.

Congratulations to each coach, sponsor and player on the winning teams and to all the teams who participated.

Congrats to you on the recovery. Good luck in the future. There was a guy at the managers meeting that had just beat prostate cancer and had the idea that cancer survivors would wear a patch so others could approach them if in the same situation. Thought it was a great idea, maybe you could get a hold of him through senior sotfball. God Bless you always. Thanks for the post.

Thanks, DuWayne. Yes, we had a very fine tournament, with all 14 players contributing - we batted everyone in every game. The competition was very tough, and we won two of our bracket games by only 1 run and the final game by 3. I think our best game was against a very fine Chicago Blue Chip team that on another day might have demolished us. But the ball bounced our way and our hitting was on throughout up and down the lineup.

Congratulations to Spot Tavern in 55AAA. What an even bracket!Almost any team could have beaten any other team in the division-and most games were very close. ARO-you had our number twice. As we knew going in, a hit here, a catch there, a triple play here can change a game. Yeah, that was me on the triple play. Ever want to crawl UNDER THE PITCHERS MOUND?? Most of us have had that moment on the field that you just cannot believe, and that one was mine. Our team is great, though. They will NEVER let me forget it. :-) we enjoyed playing you and hope to see you again next year. Thanks to all for the comaraderie and the fun!!!

Thanks Tad! We put it all together finally, despite 4 guys playing hurt, and after the tournament, those 4 were more hurt. Most of the pain not felt after the victory, but reality set in as they were driving home. 1-2 of them may need some surgery, and 2 of them got MRI's that week. The team is falling apart physically. We will probably be playing in December with whoever can make it for Hemet. Good luck on your new team.
