Health Issues
Don't know if this is the place for this or not. I'm 55 and have been haveing hip trouble for a while now and finally had a doctor tell me my hip has bad arthritis and numerous bone spurs and other than a few drugs I need hip replacement. My question is has any of you had this done and how have you done? Also have you been able to return to playing ball with any degree of competition?

Joe, I went through a hip replacement / resurfacing in Sept. 09 (I had arthritis and bone spurs also). Before the surgery, I went through physical therapy, stretching, strength exercises, etc., to no avail. The pain got so bad that I couldn't sleep, and I dragged my leg when I walked.

For me, the surgery was the best thing I ever did. The pain relief was immediate, and I was walking with a cane within a week. I played softball (3 teams) in 2010, although it took a while before I felt comfortable rotating my hips when swinging the bat.

Right now no limitations on any activities, although my doc suggests I get a courtesy runner whenever possible (thank you, SSUSA!).

Have you decided on your course of action?

55-year old pitcher on our 50 team had it done last January. He's about 6' and 210 Lbs. He tried playing a couple times during the summer after about 8-months off and it hurt him to run so we used a courtesy runner for him the few games he played. He thinks he would be OK now but we are off for the winter. He said the replacement was worth it.

Enviro-Vac,
Whatever you do, don't tell "Dirty" that you used a CR for a guy that had a little pain while running.
I hope your friend returns to full strength next year.

As athletes understand, there can be a difference between pain and injury.

He can tell me what he wants, though it would be nice to hear that the runner was not a handpicked rabbit.

Al, can you tell me what would be the harm if the CR had to be the last out?

Hey Gary,
Nothing wrong with the last out being the CR. Except if the last out is injured or one who usually has a CR. I am against hand picked speedsters for the purpose of circumventing the rule. As I have said, most of the rules are for the benefit of the players.
It's the ones that are put in for economic reasons and rules that people take advantage of that need to be tweaked.

A/33 ...nice to have a laugh before 2011.

We don't very often use a CR as we don't usually have any players that can't run. Will use a CR if someone is hurt. However, if a tie game and the winning run is on base...better try and find a rabbit!

I think the CR rule needs to be tightened up a lot. Just my $0.02

Al, if the last out is injured then you go back to the out before that one, but the guy who was bypassed for running can NOT run in that game. That would only make sense.

Enviro-Vac, under the current rules I guess I don't blame you using a rabbit in that situation, but that is the problme with the current rule. There is nothing 'courteous' about exploiting the rule for team gain.

And obviously I completely agree with you about tightening up the rule. Not to mention I guarantee you it will speed up the game, as many of the guys who currently 'need' a courtesy runner will magically be able to run for themselves if the last out is slower than they are. Most times health has nothing to do with the use of a CR.

Tater 50 It's amazing what modern medicine will do for you when you want to play so bad! I had absolutly no buisness playing that weekend if you remember how many balls I took off my legs at first on sunday, I was so loaded on pain pills I'm just glad I didn't get hurt bad. I would not ever try that again. well maybe naaaaa.

On another note it's amazing how fast a thread goes off track. I absolutly believe there is a place for a CR but it does get abused an awful lot.

Total hip replacement 12/2007. 54, 5'10", 275 Lbs. Best quality of life decision I ever made. Played in a tournament 90 days after surgery.Hit an HR my 3 time up. Played 55 Major then 55 Major + and 50 Major. 2010 played both teams, won Vegas 50 Major and Phoenix 50 Major.

Have the surgery before Obamacare kicks in. Lose weight before surgery, do the rehab as directed. It has been 3 years, I have no pain and am playing at a very decent level.

Hey Gman...My friend and teammate had both hips replaced at the same time and is so thankful that he had it done. Six months after he is playing every weekend. He pitches and plays catcher and hits it a ton. No pain but would have some difficulty playing the outfield. He said the number one thing to do before the operation was to lose weight.

gacman,i'm 57,in 2005,i had a total hip replacement.i lost alittle on my speed, but since have stayed busy with lots of leagues and tourney's with the kid's.it's working well for me,as long as i get an injection in the other hip every two months.i was unable to get the injection for the vegas tourney so i didn't run to well there.normally,i think i'm a little faster than average.i do not intend to stop playing any time soon.have you tried the injections in the joint? if the pain is in the front, next to the groin, the injection should go there.if pain is in the backside, that's where the needle goes-in the joint.it will greatly reduce your pain,so you can run faster.a docter who does those surgeries, can give the shots.they don't hurt much, it's well worth it and you can push that surgery down the road 2 or 3 years.also, when you have the surgery, you may feel like that leg is longer than the other.it's not,but the joint could be higher than your natural one.mine was.my chiropracter was familiar with this problem and xrayed me standing up.17 milimeters higher.he sold me a 8 milimeter heel lift for inside my other shoe and bingo,i didn't limp any more.if it's that far gone that injections won't work, get the surgery and you can still play.again, the injections work very well.good luck.GOD BLESS, DENNIS
