Does anyone have any idea....
why threads get closed?

Communism?
Censorship?
Suppression of free speech?
Because they can?
All of the above?
None of the above?

They get closed for a variety of reasons (but none of those reasons mentioned above). In this case, it was because, to use a baseball analogy, the pitch (reply) count was too high in relation to anything else of value being added to the thread's original posting purpose. Time to send that thread to the showers!

Gary19, I think your example on the courtesy runner thread limps a little. Where did you get your vast majority claim against blacks and women being allowed to vote? There was never a vote, straw vote or poll which substantiates your claim. You know there was opposition but no one ever put it in numbers.
Nixon is a subject that you had live through to understand why people voted for him.
I'm glad I can help you understand and to extend the Thread.Courtesy runners should be banned. They're use as an offensive weapon not as a courtesy.

Of course there was opposition to letting blacks and women vote. There is some level of opposition to most everything. Heck, Babe Ruth was not a unanimous HOF choice.

Obviously I did live through Nixon, though I was only in Junior High and High School.

Your last line is 100% correct. Though I have been called an ogre on here, along with a bunch of other less-flattering things, so I tried to compromise with my proposal. But I certainly could live with yours.

In the interest of accuracy african americans were given the right to vote by th e15th amendment passed in 1870 and women were given the same right with the 20th amendment passed august 26 1920--although I was not around then I am certain there was plenty of opposition to both actions--and to stay in context I have actually seen very little opposition to the courtesy runner!!

In the further interest of accuracy, can we stop calling it that? Who exactly is it being courteous to when used and abused to the extent I have been saying, and Ceres echoed above?

You are being courteous to the umpire and the other team when you announce that #7 is running for #20.

Gary19 and Steve65, I respect your opinion but your words, "level of opposition..vast opposition..plenty of opposition" do not quantify your statements neither does, "I have seen little opposition". You're statements must be backed by data not fuzzy words. What are Gary19 and I? Little, Big, Medium,Tiny, Microscopic opposition or what?
My problem with what you two are writing is not courtesy runners plus or minus or steve65's history book snapshot it is your poor examples.
19 Being in Jr. High means you had no understanding of Nixon 72. I think you were too young and being a non voter you couldn't have paid enough attention.
I've enjoyed sharing my opinions with you both. Hope your bats get loaded with hits by Santa.

Ceres have you ever seen an election where one candidate received all of the votes--on any subject there is opposition to one point or the other--even with 70 to 30 odds there is plenty of opposition so whats your point??
courtesy runners or pinch runners whatever you want to call them are a part of any game--reserves-- second string--and they all give a coach strategy--seems to me that is accepted everywhere except courtesy runners---they are part of the game accept it or start your own organization----to me we should all be thankful that we can play and have organizations that organize things for us---

My interpretation of the "courtesy runner" in Senior Softball is that the league is saying this....

"In recognition of the fact that many of you are at an age where physical ailments or injuries prevent you from being an effective runner, as a "courtesy" we the league are going to allow your team have someone run for you, but only use that someone once an inning.

We're doing this so that many of you (you know they say the legs are the first to go) can extend your softball career and enjoyment of the game."

The league has already created a standard of abuse by limiting the volume of courtesy runners.

If you don't like that standard, then get it changed, otherwise have another biscuit.

Steve65, My point is that if you know for a fact that say 10% of the players oppose a certain rule you say, " I know for a fact that only 10% of the players oppose the rule". If you don't have hard facts you don't say "I see little oposition to the rule", you say nothing.

Ceres i just reread every post I have made and could not find the statement you attribute to me-----"and to stay in context I have actually seen very little opposition to the courtesy runner "
that is what I said nothing about 10 percent---read the threads and you will see very few guys oppose it

Steve65, I appologize, but I didn't accuse you of saying anything about 10% I merely used that as an example. To claify my point further, I contend that you don't know what the opposition size is because you have simply taken your sample from this thread. There are more players out there. The correct way is to ask all the associations for their membership numbers. Then take a statistical sample. This, not your fuzzy words, should give a bonefide result. Until then you your phrase means nothing unless you add the words, "From what I read in this thread I have... runner"
I don't care what the argument is, if you try to justify it by arm waving words your effort is wasted.
