Rock 'n Reno Challenge Cup 2012
Praises to SSUSA for putting on a great tournament. Dealing with the rain, sleet and snow on Saturday, but by Monday it was an absolute beautiful weekend in NV. Top Notch facility at Golden Eagle. Congratsulations to Hollis Appraisals winning the 60 Major +. Really fine group of individuals and Bob Morris is one of the toughest pitchers I have ever faced. He worked the height and back of the mat like nobody's business.

The highlight of the 60 Major Plus though was the emergence of King Webbie. Mark Weber is no longer an unknown in the major plus division, 2 outs for the tourney, 4 home runs against Hollis in the seeding game, 14 or so for the tourney, throwing out runners from the outfield, and making grteat catches. Webbie's nickname had been 3A because he came from the AAA division, now it is KW aka King Webbie.

KC Kids came back from a couple of tough seeding games to beat MTC and Master Collision. It was great to see our friends/competitors from NoCal, CO, KC, and FL. The Nationals at the end of the year is going to be a Battle Royale, I can't wait.

Mike, I totally agree! Our team felt this was the best run tournament so far this year and the competition was excellent. GSF is a great group of guys and excellent ball players. Master Collision was also another competitive team of fine men. Being from Florida we have never played in snow and sleet at 4,500' but loved the environment, the mountains, Lake Tahoe and that dry air on Sunday and Monday. The balls will definitely fly at altitude!

Yes, Bobby Davis is an excellent pitchers and all the guys were excited to hear that GSF is coming to Dalton as that should be a great tournament with at least 6 teams in the 60 major plus division. Be prepared to sweat! haha Just one thing though, leave King Webbie at home! I'm now starting to recruit in 3A! Oh yeah, leave Steve Imlay at home as well.

Golden Eagle with the artificial turf, fantastic facilities, surrounding desert scenery, jack rabbits and prairie dogs running around (or whatever they were)was the best place we have ever played. The Miken bat bags were also a very good prize and an excellent product.

Again, a well run tournament and I enjoyed seeing some old friends like Brett Kreuger, Pete Graham, etc.

Ditto. Although I am not as skilled as the Major guys. I had a blast Umps were great, the facilities at Golden Eagle were incredible. Food was good and I agree the Miken Bags are awesome. Being new to Senior Softball winning a Tourney after 5 months is more than I ever figured would happen. One more thought, I watched a litle of the 60 Majors..Holy s-it..You guys are fun to watch.
Thanks to SSUSA..

Sorry about getting Bob's last name wrong. Hope is wife is getting better. Hard to play a game when you are concerned about your family.

Don't worry about us sweating, all these boys are from Az, KW is from New Mexico, and I grew up in AR. We will be ready. LOL See you then.

oldenslow-Dave Dowell told me about that 30 runs-wasn't it also the 8th inning? Wow-that is something!!
Mike A.-I'm not sure I qualify for those kudos, but I take the challenge to live up to the challenge you have given me in the earlier post. You are a great teammate to play with and a great guy (who also went 13 for 13 on Sunday). GSF-we have a do-able task ahead-we can win and have fun doing it! Great tourney to the whole team in Reno-I am proud to be a part of it.

I just got back from Reno yesterday after 8 days and playing in the 60s and 65s. Weather started out terrible - it was snowing when we landed on May 24! Friday started play in the 60 Major division and our Texas Makules team played back-to-back in cold, windy conditions with some snow and sleet thrown in for good measure. I don't think the temp got to 50 that day! Every day thereafter, the weather improved until our last day - this past Thursday.
In the 60 Major division, we finished first beating No Dice from CA 21-20 in the Championship game. There were several good games throughout the tournament, most memorably the No Dice-Timberworks game. No Dice was up 30-14 in the top of the open inning and Timberworks posted 23 runs to go up 37-30. Undeterred, No Dice threw up the necessary 8 in the bottom to win a classic, 38-37!
In the 65 Major Plus, our Omen team won after getting clobbered in the Championship game by a very good Village Merchants team from FL. We bounced back in the "If" game to win 27-6. There were also several very good games in this part of the tournament as well. We came back from 12 down to Bickerton from CA to score 13 in the bottom of the 7th to win 26-25.
We played at both Golden Eagle and Rancho San Rafael. The tournament was, as usual, well run and Dave Dowell and his wife, Fran, are to be commended for their dedication and hard work in running this event.

Just got back from Reno last night around midnight. A great tournament and a good time, I want to thanks my teammates (Hill Contracting, Austin, TX) for playing hard and especially those players who ran for me, pulled a hamstring. We played 65's AAA, does anyone know who won? Getting ready for the Texas State Championship in Dallas, will be playing with the 60's AAA team (Texas Pickups from Corpus) lots of competitive 60's AAA teams will be there.

May as well add my two cents worth!!! Just got back from Reno and I echo the thoughts of other posters. The venue, the umps, the entire tournament experience was enjoyable.

Playing for the Village Merchants in our first entry in to the 65 Major Plus Division. We faced a very tough Bickerton Iron Works, though undermanned, (they only came with 10 players), it was still a tough battle.

Facing Omen in the Winners bracket final and then two more times leading up to and including the "IF" game, it was quite an experience for all of us!

Playing first base, I was fortunate enough to interact with a lot of players as they made their way around the corner. Gentleman one and all and a credit to 65 year olds every where!!!

I am in awe of the softball abilities of ALL of the 65 plus year olds!

We'll be back!!!

Mark, we look forward to seeing the entire GSF team and hopefully some other west coast teams. Should be a great tournament as reportedly there will be at least 6 teams. The SPA is definitely one of the crown jewels to win. Played a FHC tournament this weekend and 3 of our players were inducted into the FHC Hall of Fame; Ed Rose, Roger Tabor and Bobby Davis our pitcher.

I ask Bobby why he didn't walk you after you had already hit 3 in a row and he said he didn't believe anybody could hit four straight off of him! I bet he now thinks nobody can hit 5 in a row! haha See ya in Dalton!

audie-you were so far ahead that I could not hurt you and I believe you never walk a guy when you are ahead in the last inning and he is not the tying or winning run. No freebies in the last inning.
Congratulations to the new Hall of Fame members!
See you in Dalton.

Bobby Davis' wife is doing fine and is home from the hospital. They leave in about 9 days for a trip to Germany to play ball so hopefully she will be well enough to travel. His wife, Susan, makes the best oatmeal cookies I have ever eaten. we have guys that come to tournaments just to get one of her goodies!

Another ditto for this great tournament and many thanks to all that help put it on for all of us ballplayers. We
played in the 70 AA bracket and we ended up playing the
two Utah teams ( Old Bones and the Zone) 5 games total.
All were very close games and real battles and both these teams had a great bunch of nice friendly ballplayers and it was a joy to play against this kind of ballplayers and teams.
