FOURTH ANNUAL MAYOR'S CUP A HUGE SUCCESS

Feb. 1, 2016

The Fourth Annual Mayor's Cup was held in Kailua-Kona, HI from Jan. 17 - 20. The tournament consisted of two divisions, Women 50+ and Men 60+.

The Women's division is in its second year and the only women's senior softball tournament held in the state.

The women's field consisted of five teams from the mainland, all recruited by Cathy Nicholson, and one local team.

The Coral Reef team took fist place in the women's division.

The Men's division had teams from Rochester, NY (Smash It Sports), Detroit, MI (Jack's Blasters) and Central, CA (War Eagles), as well as four teams from Hawaii.

The men's division winner was Jack's Blasters.

One of the players from the Kona Legends, who also umpires for SSUSA, Benn Miller, took the opportunity of being in Hawaii to marry Laura Wilder.  The ceremony was officiated by Barry Finkenberg, who also umpired games in the Women's division.

The Mayor's Cup is also a fund raiser for the Hawaii Island United Way.  This year, $17,481 was raised for HIUW.

Next year's tournament is tentatively scheduled for Jan. 15 - 18, 2017.
