20 TEAMS COMPETE AT THE 10th ANNUAL SOUTHERN CHAMPIONSHIPS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.  – Twenty teams converged at Liberty Park Sports Complex for the 2016 Southern Championships Aug 9-14. As a Tournament of Champions (TOC) qualifier, six teams secured their spot in the crown jewel of Senior Softball to be held in February in Florida.

After going 0-3 in seeding play in the four-team 65 AAA division and dropping their first game in bracket play against top seed Travelers (GA), 22-9; No. 4 seed The Firm (TN) rattled off four straight victories, including back-to-back wins over Travelers, 18-17 and 20-18, in the championship and “if” games, respectively. Slo Sox (AL) finished in third place.

Playing a best two-out-of-three game playoff in the 60 AAA division, Atlanta Recycling 60’s lost the first game, 14-12, then won games two (20-16) and three (21-8) over RPR (AL) to take the title.

In the six-team 50 Major division, No.4 seed Alabama Brick went 4-0 in bracket play to take home the championship. Alabama Brick knocked off Lighthouse Look Outs (TN), 21-16, top seed seed Georgia Impact Legends, 23-19 and Montgomery 50’s twice, 14-11 and 22-21, the latter being the championship game. No. 2 seed Monster Softball (TN) finished in third place after winning three straight games in the elimination side of the bracket.

No. 2 seed Major League Seniors (GA) won the three-team 50 AAA division defeating Atlanta Fifties, 30-14 and top seed Kent’s Players/Magnolia Softball (MS), 18-5, before knocking off Atlanta Fifties again for a second time, 18-0, in the championship game.

The 55 Major division featured a best two-out-of-three game series between David Bowen Sporting Goods (FL) and TN Connection.  David Bowen won a pair of close matchups, 15-13 and 22-20, to complete the sweep.

In the three-team 55 Silver division, No. 3 seed DT Express (TN) edged out in-state foe No. 1 seed (BY) Grace Redeemed (TN), 22-21, in the “if” game, after falling in the championship game, 18-17.
