Salem Hosts 12th Annual Jim Sherman Memorial Northwest Championships

SALEM, ORE. – The 12th annual Jim Sherman Memorial Northwest Championships was held here for a second straight year, as 44 teams competed at Wallace Marine Park Softball Complex, July 11-16.

"The weather was fabulous," said tournament director Doug Doolittle. "Low-mid 80's and the fields were in great condition. Teams played well with great competition and sportsmanship."

The tournament began with the Men’s 65 Gold division, as Oregon Crabs defeated Enviro-Vac Marauder 65 (British Columbia) 29-15 in the championship game to complete a perfect 3-0 record in bracket play. Stagecoach Saloon (OR) finished in third place.

W.E. Ruth Realty (WA) swept Masters Marauders (British Columbia) by scores of 16-7 and 17-15 in a best two-out-of-three game series for the Men’s 70/75 Platinum division.

Suburban Auto Group (OR) laid claim to the Men’s 70/75 Gold division via its 20-3 victory over General Equipment (OR) in the championship game. Silver City Brewers (WA) finished in third place.

Moving to the second session, Cody Staffing/Dirty Sports (WA) swept Team Haras (WA) in a pair of thrillers, 18-17 and 27-26, to win the best two-out-of-three game series for the Men’s 40 Master Major Plus division.

NorthWest Legends 40 (WA) took the Men’s 40 Masters Gold division with its 23-11 win over Mach One 40’s (WA) in the championship game to complete their 3-0 record in bracket play. J & L Athletics (WA) finished in third place.

Northwest DeMarini/Stark St. Pizza (WA) came out of the elimination side of the bracket to double-dip NW Legends (WA), 32-31 and 18-12, in the championship and “if” games, respectively, in the Men’s 50/55 Major Plus division. As the highest finishing 55 Major Plus team, NW Legends would earn a TOC bid for the 55 Major Plus division. CornerStone (OR) finished in third place.

Hara’s/Jersey Lilly 50s (OR) and WPI/Mc U Sports (ID) played a best two-out-of-three game series to determine the champion in the Men’s 50 Major division, as WPI/Mc U Sports won the rubber match in a thriller 12-11 after the teams traded wins in the first two games.

The eight-team Men’s 50 AAA division saw Snapped Off Sports/Sam City (OR) come back to win the “if” game, 9-4, against Portland Marathon (OR) after falling in the championship game, 22-21. Rogues (OR) finished in third place.

Wilson Auto (ID) would also avenge their loss in the championship game, falling to Doerflinger (WA) 18-15 before going on to win the “if” game 17-15 in the Men’s 55 Major division. Bulldogs 55 (OR) finished in third place.

Michael’s/Magic Toyota (WA) swept Senior Bend Elks (OR) in a best two-out-of-three game series in the Men’s 55 AAA division, winning games one and two by scores of 20-18 and 25-16, respectively.

After going 3-0 in seeding play to lock up the top seed in the four-team Men’s 60 Major division, Goodman Racing (WA) won a hard-fought game in the “if” game, 11-9, over Second Wind Resurrected (WA), after losing in the championship game, 24-23. Bulldogs 60’s (OR) finished in third place.

The six-team Men’s 60 Silver division saw the top two seeds go to an “if” game, as Traschel Auto Body I (OR) defeat Auto Accessory Distributing (OR), 25-9. Auto Accessory edged out Traschel Auto Body I, 29-28, in the championship game to force the “if” game. Northwest Softball Club/Underdogs (ID) finished in third place.
