OBITUARIES - 8/4/17

Aug. 1, 2017

Shane Curtis Verley, 61, of Chehalis, WA, died on June 21.

Shane enjoyed a long and distinguished career with Senior Softball-USA, both as an accomplished player/manager since 2008 and as the SSUSA's Washington State Director and Northwest Regional Umpire-in-Chief.

His playing career spanned ten years with some of the most successful teams in the Pacific Northwest. Most recently, Shane played in both the 2017 Yakima Qualifier and Rock ‘N Reno Challenge Cup with Second Wind Resurrected (Men’s 60 Major) out of Washington.

Shane served as an accomplished Tournament Director for SSUSA and is best remembered fondly for his very successful annual "Rock at the RAC" event in Lacey, WA, blending exceptional senior softball with Classic Rock and Roll.

The entire Senior Softball Community has lost an outstanding man, and we extend our most sincere condolences to his family and friends.

He graduated from W. F. West High School in 1973, and attended Central Washington University, where he obtained a bachelor of science degree in computer science and business management. His IT career began in city government and then with the Washington State Health Care Authority, where he worked for over two decades.

A full profile of Shane will appear in the Fall edition of Senior Softball News.

Charles “Chuck” Stewart Burns, 58, of Mt. Zion, IL, died on July 14.

Chuck began playing in SSUSA in 2009 with OKI Players, and most recently played with Team Illinois in 2016 and 2017. This season, Chuck played in the Brickyard Invitational, Milwaukee Classic and Quad Cities.

“Chuck was a great player and friend and, more importantly, was a great human being,” said teammate Jimmy Golianis.

After high school, where he attended Stephen Decatur High, Chuck enlisted in the Marines and served his country for the next four years.

Dr. William “Carey” Hall, 67, of Richardson, TX, died on July 16.

Carey proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as a pharmacist, for eighteen years, where he retired as a Lt. Col.

Within SSUSA, Carey was a longtime member of the Dallas Spurs, playing with the 55, 60 and 65 teams. He most recently played during the 2016 season, playing in the Winter National Championships and the Oil City Classic.

“If you played tournament ball in the Texas area, you probably knew or played against Carey,” said teammate Jim Morgan. “Over and above his softball and career accomplishments, Carey was just a super nice guy. He always had a smile and a joke. I never heard Carey say a negative word about another person. Rest in Peace, Carey. I hope they're playing two in heaven today.”
