Robert Smith - Florida UIC
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Senior Softball – USA (SSUSA) is happy to announce the appointment of Robert Smith as the Umpire-In-Chief (UIC) for the state of Florida.
“We are excited to have Robert Smith join our SSUSA umpire leadership team as Florida UIC,” said Terry Hennessy, SSUSA chief executive officer. “Robert brings excellent experience and exciting ideas to SSUSA.”
Smith umpired baseball early in his career and transitioned to softball in his mid-40’s, working ASA, USSSA, and Freedom Sports. He moved to senior softball in his early 50’s, and most recently worked the Original Tournament of Champions this month, umpiring games in the 50, 60, and 65 AAA divisions, as well as the Louisville Slugger Warriors vs. TOC All-Stars exhibition game.
“I’m very excited,” said Smith on his new position. “I want to improve upon the quality of umpires and ensure rules and regulations are met, along with proper mechanics. We are going to hold a training in Florida to make sure the mechanics of our umpires are the same across the board. We want to make Florida the best, so players know they will get the best when coming to a tournament here.”
Along with umpiring the game, Smith has also played the game, playing in the 2016 LVSSA/SSUSA World Masters Championships with Florida Automated Shade (Men’s 50), as well as in Florida Half Century with Highway Men. Smith also umpires in Florida Half Century.
