2018 Brickyard Invitational Hosts 35 Teams

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The 2018 Brickyard Invitational, held here at Midwest Sports & Social Complex May 2-6, was home to 35 teams.

Weather wreaked havoc during the first session, as rained canceled out bracket games scheduled for Thursday, May 3. As the top overall seeds in their respective three-team brackets, Pope Transport (WI) (Men’s 60/65 Major Division) and Chicago Gray Sox (IL) (Men’s 65/70 Silver Division) were each determined champions.

In the lone bracket game held in the Men’s 60/65 Major Division Wednesday, Indiana Legends defeated Motown Stars (MI), 19-16. In the lone bracket game of the Men’s 65/70 Silver Division on Wednesday, Indy Fog defeated Indiana Legends/Columbus, 20-14.

The tournament resumed on Friday, with the 50 and 55 Major Divisions in action starting seeding play.

In the nine-team Men’s 50 Major Division, Walker Brothers (AL) rattled off three straight wins in bracket play to reach the championship game. Public Enemy (FL) bounced back from an 0-2 showing in seeding play, going 4-1 in bracket play, including a 22-15 victory over Gem City Softball (OH) in the third-place game, to earn a spot in the championship game against Walker Brothers.

Unable to play the championship game, Public Enemy forfeited the final, giving Walker Brothers the championship.

The Men’s 50/55 Major Plus Division saw DLB (MI) sweep Bad Boyz (KY) in a best two-out-of-three game series, by scores of 36-28 and 28-12, respectively.

The six-team Men’s 50 AAA Division saw the bracket go all the way to the “if” game, as Big Hurt Softball/Crest Exteriors (IL) defeated Chitown Assualt/Miken/T2Auto/DynaMac (IL), 23-5; after falling in the championship game, 34-22. Chitown Assualt scored 10 runs in the top of the open to take the championship game with ease. Top seed 50 Degrees (MO) finished in third place.

The eight-team Men’s 55 Major Division featured a forfeit in the championship game, as Ohio Elite/Creative Stucco/Louisville Slugger was crowned the champion, with Dayton Legends (OH) taking the runner-up spot. Ohio Elite defeated Dayton Legends earlier in the bracket, with a walk-off, 22-21, win to reach the championship game. WC Thunder 55 (IL) finished in third place.

Playing in the four-team Men’s 55 AAA Division, Windy City Softball 60 (IL) defeated HCI GET-A-PRO 55’s (IA), 26-12, in the championship game. Leading 16-12 heading into the top of the open, Windy City Softball added some insurance runs, plating 10 runs in their half of the open. Windy City also showed off their defensive prowess in the bottom of the open, ending the game on a triple play. Milwaukee Merchants (WI) finished in third place.
