2018 Bert Bennett Memorial Recap

WESTMINSTER/WOODBINE, Md. – The 2018 Bert Bennett Memorial, held here at Carroll County Sports Complex and Salt Box Park, hosted 28 teams, July 13-15.

Starting with the Men’s 60-65 Gold Division, Chesapeake Grey (PA) swept High Street Bucs 65 (MD) by scores of 15-13 and 24-21, respectively, in a best two-out-of-three game series.

The Bank (DE) and High Street Bucs 60 (MD) played all three games in their best two-out-of-three game series for the Men’s 60 Major Division. High Street Bucs took the opener 14-12, while The Bank evened the series with a 23-21 victory in game two. The Bank completed the comeback taking the rubber match 18-8.

Olympian Athletics (PA) won the four-team Men’s 55 Major Division, defeating Phoenix Tube (NJ) 19-11 in the “if” game, after dropping the championship game 16-15. Phoenix Tube dropped its opening game in the bracket against Olympian Athletics 20-12 before winning three straight games, including the championship game, before running out of gas in the “if” game. Maryland Cougars finished in third place.

Team Dudley/East Coast (MD) swept RV Carey’s/Walk (MD) with a pair of one-run thrillers, 19-18 and 24-23, respectively, in a best two-out-of-three game series, to win the Men’s 50 Major Division.

High Street Bucs 50’s (MD) won the six-team Men’s 50 AAA Division, going 3-0 in bracket play, including a 20-16 win over PA Senior Hitmen in the championship game. PA Senior Hitmen survived the elimination side of the bracket winning three straight games en route to their runner-up finish. Maryland Classics finished in third place.

PA Posse 40’s won the five-team Men’s 40 Major Division, going 4-0 in the bracket, including a 33-16 win over East Coast Berserk/LB (MD) in the championship game. East Coast Berserk made a valiant run through the elimination side of the bracket winning three straight games to reach the championship game, before running out of steam. Color By Design (MD) finished in third place.

Y’All Next (MD) won the three-team Men’s 40 AAA Division, going 3-0 in the bracket, including a 24-9 win over Red Eye/RHSK Softball (MD) in the championship game. Live! Casino (MD) finished in third place.

The Women’s 40 Major Division featured a best two-out-of-three game series, with Twisted Fossils (MA) sweeping No More (VA) by scores of 24-8 and 26-18, respectively.

The Women’s 40 AAA Division also featured a best two-out-of-three games series, with Lew’s Crew/Exceeding Expectations (MD) downing Diamond Mermaids (NJ), 12-10 and 12-4.
