Maynard Saugstad
Maynard Saugstad, 94, of St. Petersburg, Fla. died on Oct. 30.
Playing with Kids and Kubs 75, Saugstad earned All-Tournament honors with Softball Players Association (SPA) in 2000, 2001, and 2002.
Saugstad is a former president of Kids and Kubs, also known as the three-quarter century softball club, which was formed back in 1930. All players must be past their 74th birthday to try out for the league.
In 2009, Saugstad joined SSUSA on trips to Taiwan - for the Asia Cup International Slow Pitch Softball Championships, and Japan - for the 11th Annual All Japan Champion Cup International Softball Tournament.
The oldest player at the time, Saugstad, 84, was selected as MVP of the Far East Tour, as the SSUSA team finished second in Japan and third in Taiwan.
“Maynard brought class and a deep understanding of the game to the games in both Taiwan and Japan,” said Terry Hennessy, CEO of SSUSA and manager of the teams. “He was an excellent example of the best parts of our sport.”
