Softball News Report

LAS VEGAS – For the first time since the Annual 90s Game began, the West 90s beat the East 90s here 19-12 on Sept. 22.

The Fourth Annual 90s Game pitted the elder statesmen of the East against the West at Big League Dreams in an event that drew a large crowd of family, other players and fans.

The 90s West team wore blue jerseys this year, as the 90s East team wore red.

Senior Softball USA’s Bobby Ellison, who has put the game together for each of the past four years captured the essence of the event:

“While watching the 90s play again this year, I was thinking that besides being inspirational, these 90-year-olds are creating memories for themselves, their teammates and all who watched the game.”

“Senior Softball really is much more than just a game,” said Ellison.

Many of the players hit shots for extra bases – and a few home runs over the cones at 250 feet in the outfield.

90s West player, Ralph Ventura of California, runs to first base after batting.

“When I started in Senior Softball…. more than 25 years ago, the oldest division was the 70s,” said Terry Hennessy, SSUSA’s chief executive officer. “Today, it is the 90s.”

“This is a momentous occasion because it represents the emergence of a whole generation of players who have extended their health and playing ability for many, many years. It gives those of us younger than 90 inspiration.”

90s West manager, Richard (Red) Simmons of California (left) and 90s East manager, Dick Anderson of Minnesota (right), join together with the umpire for the coin toss.

As in all of Senior Softball, the 90s players came from states throughout the United States, playing together for a common goal – to compete with comradery…and they were all smiling.
