Discussion: Why Do Some Guys Lose It Sooner

Ceres raises a point I would like to discuss.
Simply put, since as you get older you lose muscle and gain fat, if your weight stays the same as you get older, you are getting fatter as a % of your body weight. Think of the out of shape old guys with thin arms and big fat bellies.
I have come to the conclusion that unless you are very thin you must lose a pound or 2 a year to maintain fitness. In my experience, I think the heavier guys deteriorate faster, but this is maybe just saying the obvious that the thinner guys are in better shape. Thin really isn't the right term, actually it is % of weight which is fat. That said, I am having problems keeping my weight down, lifting and running but I know if I don't I will decline faster.

Discussion: Why Do Some Guys Lose It Sooner

Approaching 70, and having played SB for 5 years, I note big individual differences in how soon batters lose the ability to drive the ball as they did in prior years. I recognize that age is an obvious factor and that scientifically it is proven that we lose muscle mass as we age, but I think I am seeing more.
Is it as simple as some guys just work out harder and smarter and keep what they have longer? I think this is part of it.
Is it genetics? Probably to some degree, but science can't prove it, but can show how far your cells have aged. One other factor I have noticed which might only apply to rec players: it seems some guys just lose the desire to attack the ball. This just might be a corollary of not being in shape, but I think it is independent. I am wondering if others have any thoughts on this and if others have advice on how to stave off the inevitable as long as possible. Your thoughts?

Great story, Ceres. Your last post proves my point I think. My point is there is no down side to trying it and as you point out there may be special cases that need it. You didn't seem like the mythology type. LOL

Discussion: Infield Fly Rule

Today's game had a bad call involving the Infield Fly Rule. It is a pet peeve of mine that umps call it too soon before they can truly assess whether it is a routine out. In senior ball,
particularly at the rec level, infield flies are rarely routine
especially if the infielder has to back.
The rule is intended to stop a cheap double play and to me umps should keep that in mind. If a fielder is off balance and retreating to make the catch, it is unlikely if he drops it, intentionally or not, that a double play will result if the runners aren't sleeping.
Technical question: We play in an all dirt infield with the dirt going fairly far back. Can it be an infield fly if the ball lands on the green behind the dirt infield??

Ceres, I couldn't agree more with your last post.
I have tried many things since I started with SB
5 years ago and have stopped using many of them since they didn't work for me. Clean Up, all I can say is I think they work for me. I buy strips which self adhere, make no mess and just pull off
when the game is over. On ebay you can buy 36 for about 6 bucks. Other styles from Mueller cost more and I haven't tried them yet. They also have a style which is 1 strip which goes from under 1 eye over the nose and under the other eye which,
which I previously mentioned. This makes sense to me and I intend to try that next (package of 12).
Ceres, are you the Ceres from mythology or astronomy??

I don't understand the reference to growing up which is irrelevant and off point. If you don't think it works, fine. Mueller's website has some not very good science which measures that less light is reflected. Whether that makes a difference is for discussion. They have newer strips under the name "stealth" which they claim has special properties to disperse light and thus
have less reflected to the eye. Incidentally, from prior research I know that eye color affects how you see in the sun. (Blue eyes have more problems with glare.) So it is possible that the strips work for some and not others. If we never grew up, we would still be taking salt pills before games and not drinking water. At my age I prefer to keep "growing up," by constantly trying new things and determining what works for me.

I use the Mueller strips. They are cheap, don't make a mess and are easy to put on and take off.
I only use them on 1 of our 4 fields which has a nasty sun field. I think they help but can't prove it. I notice they now make 1 strip which goes under both eyes and across the nose. Theoretically this should cut glare even more since less reflection off the nose. My attitude is if it is cheap and may help I do it. Available on ebay if can't get locally.

Thank you Mike. One of my bats is a Virus I picked up cheap from Anaconda. It is also end loaded with a 10 inch barrel. The advertising for this bats also states what you say- a shorter barrel generates more batspeed. The increased speed coming from the hip is a new concept to me.
When my inconsistent self hits the ball correctly,it seems to do almost as well as a good senior bat. I use it for BP because it is close to my MM in feel.

Excuse my naivete and I don't want to bust anyone's euphoria, and I understand the positive psychological effect of swinging what you are convinced is the best bat for you, but, curiously, why objectively do you guys think this is such a great legal bat??

Discussion: Lower Back Pain Home Remedies

Whoa. Surf, don't do anything drastic. Check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjTbU9-ogbU
It gives a method to determine if it is the piriformis muscle problem. Since you don't describe sciatica pain, it is probably piriformis.
If so, the video suggested by 4 x4, is probably all you need. Be sure to have your neck supported as shown in the video. Most back pain goes away on its own if you continue to move. I would be very conservative as shown in the video before trying drastic stuff like inversion and chiropractic adjustment. Piriformis is often misdiagnosed. After you are better, you may want to continue to do these stretches prophylactically. Don't do them before games or practice but do at least 4 hours before vigorous activity. (Static stretching makes you weaker immediately after but is good if done well before activity when the weakening effect has dissipated.)

Discussion: Anyone used or tried compression socks ?

Salsa, I checked the phiten site you referenced.
They may be wonderful socks, but they are not compression socks. They do sell a compression elbow and upper arm sleeve, designated as such.

The same company makes Miken Rawlings and Worth and all 3 sell compression socks from VO2FX which is probably a related company. The ones from Miken which I saw online at Amazon were clearly marked 20 to 30 which will supply diabetic grade
compression. I believe all have a 2-year warranty and you register them online which I did. The have a lot of CoolMax in them and I have found them not to be hot and they are also advertised to provide abrasion resistance.

I use them and like them but have not found any research. The compression is measured by a number. It is critical that the ankle compression be higher than the calf compression to drive the blood out of the lower leg. The strongest for diabetics are rated 20 to 30. I bought 2 pairs from Rawlings designed for baseball rated at 15 to 20 although the site doesn't say that and the rep couldn't answer my question. I know the rating based on the packaging.
Although it is subjective, I think I get less swelling and faster recovery, but it might all be in my head. I also wear compression shorts (Bike
7625) and wear compression tops after I play and think they help.
Besides socks you can buy compression calf sleeves which are like elbow sleeves. If interested I suggest you call Alan who posts here because I know he sells his favored brand and is far more knowledgeable than I. He is a triathlete besides being a softball guru and the triathletes all use compression wear.

Discussion: Illegal bat

This makes no sense. Ask for an explanation and also ask for a list of banned bats. Ask the guy who first told you it was ok why it now isn't. My guess is that they may ban all endloaded, but I have never heard of a league doing that. Appeal the ruling to the pres. of league. Weird??

Discussion: Senior bat 1 year warranty

I have no vested interest here. Bought a maxload
last year from them at great price for another guy.
They sell many items, have been on ebay since
2005, have a 99.8% rating.
The listing includes the following:

VMInnovations is proud to offer you the Miken Ultra II Maxload SSUSA Slowpitch Softball Bat. Great for slowpitch softball players everywhere. The bat is approved for play by the SSUSA. Featuring a 2 1/4" barrel, and at 34" long and 28oz its the perfect bat. We are an authorized Miken dealer, selling new warranted products.

Caveat emptor.

I found this in the item description at the end:

VMInnovations is proud to offer you the Miken Ultra II Maxload SSUSA Slowpitch Softball Bat. Great for slowpitch softball players everywhere. The bat is approved for play by the SSUSA. Featuring a 2 1/4" barrel, and at 34" long and 28oz its the perfect bat. We are an authorized Miken dealer, selling new warranted products.

Brand New Miken Ultra II Maxload SSUSA Two-Piece Slowpitch Softball Bat SPU2M (2-1/4) Barrel, 34"/28oz!

They claim they are authorized. I note they only sell Miken Softball bats. If they don't confirm back in writing I wouldn't buy. Use the Ebay message system. Most sellers on Ebay are super honorable because bad responses get them kicked off Ebay.

Yes, but if you call them they will probably confirm as they did on a Maxload I bought from them. But I would confirm in writing first from them.

I found this on ebay and for 190 they say there is a 1 year warranty with a 60 days money back guarantee. It looks like a big co:

Ed, this is the best thread yet why this might be the real deal and also why it is prudent to wait until you and other trsted professionals field test the final approved bat.
