Discussion: age

I'm still playing "50's" (the younger age for senior softball) and if you would have told me when I was 33 I'd still be playing in 20 years I would have told you, you were nuts-----------so go ahead and call me a senior or whatever else--------------I'm just glad to hae my health and still be playing.

Several others guys playing in "50's" I know are fortunate to have worked 30/35 years at a career, and were able to retire, so I think that also qualifies as "seniors" too

Discussion: Pitchers Protective Head Gear coming to MLB Baseball

This certainly sounds "familiar" to what we are up against in senior softball:

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon McCarthy joined "The Buzz" podcast Wednesday and said there's a chance that MLB pitchers could have the option of wearing special protective headgear as early as the 2014 season.

He said the headgear would look like a hat but would be able to protect a pitcher from serious injury.

"They're coming," McCarthy said of the headgear. "From everything I know they'll be available this year. I don't believe they're going to be mandatory. Actually, I'm almost certain they won't be mandatory.

"I did get a chance to sit down with the head MLB doctor last year during spring training, who's overseeing the whole thing, and it has been a high priority for them. It's just that there has been very few answers. We both agreed on it not being mandatory at the time, there's just no need to do that. But whatever gets proposed has to be correct or we're not really doing too much."

When reached for comment on this possibility, an MLB spokesperson said, "One product that has passed the testing standards should be available to players for next season. We are still evaluating a number of other potential products. Our conversations with the MLBPA are ongoing. We expect this issue to continue to evolve, but we believe this is an important first step."

McCarthy, as you might remember, suffered a serious injury when took a line drive off the side of his head during a game in 2012 when he was with the A's. He said the new headgear that he's working on with a company would have prevented that injury.

"It should be strong enough and capable enough that literally if I got hit by the same exact ball I would have been able to keep pitching in that game," McCarthy said.

The only problem with the headgear? How it looks.

"It looks ridiculous and we get so used to the way things look," said McCarthy, who recently took a picture of himself with the headgear on and sent it to other pitchers in the league. "You mentioned the new football helmets and batting helmets, everything looks silly until it doesn'€™t look silly anymore."

You can listen to McCarthy's entire comments on the headgear right here:

Discussion: Warning about too many pain medications

Webbie25: GREAT advise!!!!!!!

Peronally I had my meniscus operated on fall of 2012 after suffering through the summer. I was popping "aleve's" and stuff like that for a few months to continue playing in multiple leagues + tournaments--------glad I did it.

I also got tired of not being able to see (eye site), so had lasiks surgery on both eyes just five weeks ago---------and was dumb enough to go play in Fort Myers a couple weeks ago. Tough, tough eye adjustments for me----------should have stayed home!!!!!

Only about 17/18 days after surgery, my eyes were still not completely healed (and still aren't according to my eye doc)-------Don't risk playing and hurting your health is my advise. explore surgery or alternatives for whatever affects your health------I'd like to keep playing many many more years

I hardly ever take pain pills, BUT I have found that if you take an aleve (or similar) morning of a tournament (and chug lots of gatorade/powerarde with it) and then take another maybe 5/6 hours later it helps with pain of playing multiple games per day (and staying hydrated thoughout the day)(and anything with potassium (banana, orange, whatever)---------just don't over do it with the meds!!!!

Its great to still be playing.

Another reason scores on-line in "real time" would help----------we were at the SSUSA tourney in Ft Myers last week, and we were done early on Friday, our hotel was 15 miles/30 minutes away. Games still going on for a few hours.

Instead of sending guys back to field to check brackets or call a phone number that just goes to a voice mail, would just make scheduling things easier. (what seed are we, what time is game tomorrow, who do we play, how did they do, etc, etc, etc)

(i.e.) just look at your phone from hotel or wherever, and know whats going on???

Understood based on current format.

However there has to be a way to "just post scores" who won, who lost and score

I dont think it is needed to fill out the actual bracket which is probably why it cant be done with current software?

People just want to see scores, seeding games or actual tournament.

It could be "as simple" as starting a new thread for discussion on friday or saturday nights at a tournament and listing all the games played that day???

I've posted on this site from a smart phone so you would think the guy in charge at each facility could post the scores from that complex each day, per division???

Discussion: How long does it take to update SSUSA card?

THANKS to all, I am not worried about having the physical card in my possession.

I am trying to update on-line roster, tournament is in two weeks.

Still says several guys on my team are expired, although I know I personally called SSUSA over a week ago, (as did other players) they took credit card over the phone, shows on my credit card statement.

We are still "expired" on the on-line roster for Winter Nationals in Ft Myers.

Also we have new guys who registered with SSUSA,just turned 50, same drill, all paid for, their names don't come up yet to even add to the on-line roster???

Entered our team last week in Winter Nationals in the Fort Myers 2014 tournament in November. Also updated my SSUSA card since mine expired after 5 years.

We are playing 50 Major.

Looking over our roster as I was adding it on-line, my personal ID still shows expired, and a couple other guys said they also updated their ID's last week and also shows expired.

Just asking how long before those refresh? I'm guessing something to do "maybe" with this being October 2013 and 2014 starts with SSUSA November 1st?? But other guys with current 5 year ID's were added to roster with non expired ID's

Discussion: BLACK MIKEN ULTRA 2 PROBLEMS FIXED ?

I could be wrong, but I believe most of the bad bats last year got out to retail stores?

At least that is what the guy at my local softball supply store told me???

Corky also told me something similar at a tournament last year, but also explained what to do, and how to do it, and again, Miken took care of it for not only me, but two of my buddies who got the same bad batch of bats from same store.

Discussion: Northern Championships (Lansing Michigan)

Congrats to "Still Young" from the Wisconsin/Illinois area for Winning 50 Major, and defeating us "CPOA Cleveland/Northern Ohio Printing" in the Championship game!!!

You guys have a very well balanced team, good bunch of guys!!! Good luck down the road.

Also, a thumbs up, back in 2012 the Potterville softball complex got a lot of bad ink here on this board.

Field Conditions were much better this year, (green grass in outfields) restrooms were clean, tournament director did a very nice job with everything, & very well run this year, in my opinion.

Infields were a little rough, but so much improved!!!!

GOOD JOB

DAVE we missed you this year!!!!

Agreed about Corky!!!! Great guy, spoke to him in Lansing over last weekend, and have at different tourneys for years!!!!

How in the world did they run out of Northern Championship "man size" t-shirts by early Saturday morning in Lansing???

Note to self----------Not many senior players wear "mediums"

Discussion: BLACK MIKEN ULTRA 2 PROBLEMS FIXED ?

I believe the batch of bad bats went into circulation about a year ago, maybe a little longer.

I had a bat with same issue Cougar had above, and Miken replaced it very promptly for me, after I sent it back with RA# back to Miken for inspection.

My replacement bat is fine.

This might be an old topic, but I can't find anything.

Is there anywhere on this site where there is public viewing of other teams SSUSA tournament rosters???? On-Line rosters?

If there is, I cannot find it.

Just asking and curious.

Thanks

getting back to the thread, I "used to" wear eye black often and it does help. Now I wear sunglasses with no eye-black on bright days. I keep it in my bag, just in case the mood strikes me again.

Jsheeran----------------Yes, I'll forget for you too LOL. You guys are MUCH better than that.

OKI kicked our butts in Tournament Finals for the Championship, although they do that to many teams more often than not.

What tourney was this? Something similar witnessed by me in Maumee (Toledo) over the weekend.

Guys shuffling between two fields, and what made it worse, yes they all had same team name, half the guys had no numbers on their jerseys, and its a top notch major plus team too, you'd think they'd at least have numbers on the shirts???

But the team I saw was NOT in same bracket.
