Ball would be fair, but question is the runner safe or out if in foul territory. I would guess runner would be out.

Staff, this must be a specific SSUSA rule, it would not apply as you describe anywhere else I can find. I could be mistaken and would be curious of Stick's input on USSSA rules.

Then the next question would be does it have to pass the entire base? Your interpretation seems wrong to me.

In baseball if it touches the base, not touches the ground, it is fair.

A (batted) baseball is fair if:

it stops in fair territory before it reaches first or third base (A), or
it hits a base (B), or
bouncing or rolling, it passes first or third base on or above fair territory (C), or
it passes first or third base in the air and makes its first bounce in fair territory (D), or
the baseball is hit so far that it leaves the playing field between the foul poles or hits one of them (both of which types of events are very good for the batter) (E) or
the defense touches it while it is moving on or above fair territory.

Using Google earth and the ruler tools, looks like 3 of them are 300 feet and the other is about 320 all around. Looks like a pretty nice facility.

Need to eliminate 1 division, only have AA, AAA and Major. The current major players would migrate to AAA or major and make more teams in both divisions (as Major plus players would now be Major). AAA & Major go to 1 up on HR rule.

Discussion: Is Pitching Mask mandatory

In 2004 ranking was by money paid to play among other things. Woody is Justin Atwood.

The examples I gave were all young players at the top of their game pitchers. Accidents happen, it is a small price to pay to avoid serious injury.

Discussion: Is Pitching Mask mandatory

Woody in 2004 was ranked #2 pitcher in the nation. He was offered 24,000 to sit for the team that had the #1 ranked pitcher. They didn't want to bat against him. There were 3 super major teams that year including B & J Kluever Snap On who Woody pitches for.

Woody has said many times that if a pitcher wanted to go after you, you would not have time to get out of the way. Every pitch, he is back several steps and ready to field. I hardly think as Skeptical put it that he lacks in defensive ability.

Take a look at this picture a friend of mine playing C ball in Phoenix, I think in 2001. Link at http://www.clubteams.org/hit.htm

I played a couple of NSA tournaments with a player who pitched conference this past year, Dan Bean. He showed me the bruise on the side of his face and shoulder where a ball hit his mask. That happened to be the first time he wore a mask, he said he would never pitch without one again.

I think the mask rule is a good idea.

Saying that someone's lacks confidence in his ability is one of the silliest comments I have heard on here.

Discussion: 1 up rule

Staff,
Was there a discussion at the rules committee to change from DBO to a 1 up rule on home runs limits?

Did anyone bring up about having 11 fielders at all times? Most teams, if not all teams bring plenty of players.

These 2 may be the best of both worlds, giving some protection to the pitcher and allowing for more home runs when both teams hit them.

I would be curious how the rule is to be interpreted "past the infielder"? Does it mean it has to be further in the field than the fielder is standing? Or that it is past them, they have no chance to make the play?

Discussion: Suspensions

This was not a SSUSA tournament, but we played in a tournament a couple of months ago, the sun was so bad in the morning, I bet there were over 15 strike outs swinging. All the director had to do was move the game back 1/2 hour or so. If the sun had been facing the other way, defenders in the wrong spot with the sun, would have no chance to defend themselves. I agree jrd231, use common sense.

Sparky, I couldn't disagree with you more. Have you even read some of the responses Dave Dowell has made about the thought process that goes into setting up the national tournament? I have had disagreements with Dave in the past, but I think for you to say that there is no regard to the players, fans and sponsors is simply wrong and far from the truth.

I also think you are completely wrong about the mentioned incidence with the 40's being a reflection on the entire senior softball format. I play in 7 or 8 senior tournaments a year and rarely if ever see poor sportsmanship.

Sure there are room for improvements, but overall Senior Softball does a very good job.

480 teams! Has there ever been a tournament this big in any association? There may have been a few things that were not perfect but I believe it was incredibly well run event.
