Nancy, thank you for expressing so succinctly what many of us real "senior" players enjoy about the game. Larry Lopez 65s (70s next year).

JB, if you are a right-handed hitter, the ball does not fly out at Bayland on Field 2 unless you are a dead pull hitter. Played there 8 years and the league is excellent and organized (draft) by skill levels. The only knock is that they play single games twice weekly. BUT they do have batting practice before the first game each week and, if teams are short-handed, they have a procedure in place to allow pick-ups to play. HCSSL is a very fun, competitive league.

I agree 100% with Gary's analysis. I've been playing 65 Major Plus the last 4 years and I cannot recall one time that we have hit our allotted home runs in a game. More accurately, we often don't hit that number for the entire tournament.
Even when I played in the 50s and 55s, we did not hit home runs "at will" but we did hit quite a few back then! Of course, when I started Senior ball the Demarini was all the rage!

WalksDaughter, Please pass along to your Dad my congratulations! I had the pleasure of playing one season with Bruce with the Hendricks Sports Management team back in the mid-90s. Quite a man and quite a hitter!

Steve is a great hitter and a Christian man! Any team will benefit from adding Steve to their roster!
Best of luck in getting hooked up in Colorado or a bordering state!

Gary, I guess I won't be playing in the Mesquite tournament next year when I'm eligible to play up with you REAL senior guys! I can't cover the gaps on a 300 foot field now let alone a baseball field!
I Would suggest SSUSA (if they don't already have them scheduled) have EMTs at those huge fields where the 70s are to play.

Discussion: BUDDY HOPPER, TEXAS LEGENDS 70'S PASSES

Frankie, so sorry to hear of Buddy's passing - I am totally shocked. I really enjoyed my year playing with Buddy as our coach on the Guru Softball team in 2011. I had the distinct pleasure of having dinner with Buddy and getting to know the man off the softball field. He was truly a gentleman and will be missed.

Discussion: A.D. Starr bats

DieselDan, these bats are the Nightmare and are created by Kevin Schulstrom (Tattoball on this site). I have a 27oz which has a 2 ounce end load. They also have a 28 oz with a 3 ounce end load.
There are several big boys in Senior ball who have been swinging the Nightmare quite successfully. In addition to Kevin, Mark Canegallo (Buddah) and Pete Smith (from NJ) are guys I know who were swinging this bat back in the Fall when I bought mine in Virginia at the ISSA Nationals.
It took me quite a while to get used to the extra end load but I now like the feel and performance of this bat. It is very durable and I have heard of several guys who have several thousand swings on theirs.
I will use either this bat or the Dudley Lightning this year once we get to actually play some softball in Oklahoma!

Vern, I agree 100% with what you said. Our game is about OBA which is getting on base and not making outs.

Discussion: Passing of Fred Purvis

I had the privilege of playing with Fred on the Omen team this year - I cannot believe he is no longer with us. As has been said by several posters, Fred was one of the true gentlemen of our sport. Hitting in front of Fred, I knew I was going to get my swings because no one wanted to walk me and face Fred! My last memory of the big guy was having the opportunity to participate in a team dinner with Fred and Diane after the Las Vegas tournament. Fred, you are missed. Go with God, my friend.

Discussion: 1 and 1 pitch count

Dave, you summed it up nicely! Alternatively, we could just go to "1-pitch" and that will definitely speed up the game! 45-minute game slots could become the norm!
Now, for those who do not know me, I am stating this tongue-in-cheek!

Discussion: the new bat "Nightmare"

I agree with everything The Wood says...I hit the Nightmare with Kevin and Mark "Buddah" Canegallo in Virginia before I bought the 27. I also swung the 28 oz which has a 3 oz end load but I am not a "beast" like those two! So I chumped out and got the 27 oz which has a 2 oz end load. I'm still in the process of breaking it in and, for me, it has taken me a while to get used to the stiffness of the 2-piece construction. I'm liking the bat more and more. Improbably have 350+ Swings on it now
On the Dudley Lightening, I swung a DEMO that Gary Tryhorn had in Las Vegas and liked it right away. I got the 27 oz end load with the 12 inch barrel. I liked the bat out of the wrapper and it fits my swing well. I plan on using it in the Winter Worlds in Fort Myers.
Also, the disclaimers that Bob stated apply to me as well - I am not getting paid to sell either bat although I like them both!
