Discussion: Las Vegas Fields and Umpires

Finished up Session #2 at Sunset Park yesterday. Nothing but good things to say about the umpiring - pitch height was well controlled unlike at Shadow Rock last Friday. Other than that, I agree with the other comments about the fields and facilities at Sunset Park. Excellent Major Plus players had a very difficult time fielding balls on those infields. Bad hops were routine. I'm sure there are several hematomas as a result. A little water between games to tamp down the dust would have been welcome. Hopefully, after the construction is done, Sunset Park will be a first-rate facility.

Discussion: Las Vegas Fields and Umpires

Update: session #2 at Sunset Park. Both days so far the umping has been relatively controversy-free. No one complained to excess about the height limit.
Anyone want to share positive or negative experiences so far?

Discussion: Las Vegas Fields and Umpires

Just wondering how you guys feel about the facilities and umpires provided to handle 480 teams in Las Vegas? I' m wondering if we have reached the point of diminishing returns using sub-par fields and umpires who either are not knowledgeable about height rules in senior softball or simply do not care. Case-in-point, Sunset Park where I watched 60 M+ today; no orange safety bag and very hard infields. Games are being played in the early morning where the sun is very much a factor as well as after dark when most of us 60+ players will admit we don't see very well.

The umpiring I saw there was pretty good; however, at Shadow Mountain yesterday and Friday, there were a couple of umps who were not calling 15' pitches illegal! Furthermore, one umpire even told both complaining teams in one game I watched that " both pitcher have been pitching illegal all game, so I don't want to hear it!" I have heard many things in my 50+ years of playing this great game but that took the cake. These same two umps also had attitude problems making it appear to me that they thought they were more important than the game.

Does anyone else have experiences to share?

Discussion: Hotels in Vegas

I believe all the "Station" hotels charge a $14.95 per day "resort" fee for stuff most softball players don't use. Last time I stayed at Palace Station that was the case.

JamesLG, As FOFO said Shadow Rock is way out. It is not too far from the hotels along Boulder Highway - less than 10 miles from the Eastside Cannery. The place feels to me like you are in the middle of the desert it is relatively remote and the surroundings are stark. Parking is also a problem - there is not much of it. I will be playing 60 Major there as well. Good luck and hope to get a chance to meet a fellow board member. Larry Lopez #10 Texas Heat.

Discussion: New 2014COMBAT 10" Centenarian

The reason I asked is I saw a blue Centanarian in my senior league last Tuesday night. I had not seen it before. The guy using it was crushing the ball but he is a very big man and crushes with any stick.

Discussion: Western National Championships

Allan55, the tournament detail for Aurora shows only 41 teams signed up for the Rocky Mountain Championships. Deadline for entries was August 2.
Out Texas Makulis team played in the Western Nationals in Aurora last year and my wife and I really enjoyed the complex and the Aurora area! For us, it was a "drive" tournament, so expenses were not too bad.
I just got back from playing in the Western Nationals in Sacramento this year with Omen from California. Although there were 104 teams, as was stated above, most were from California (71 by my count). Not one Texas team was on the list. We played at the Sacramento Softball Complex and the fields were below par - all needed to be mowed and some were sopping wet from too much watering from the sprinkler system. Otherwise, the fields were well-maintained between games.
I would certainly support moving the Western Nationals back to Aurora.

Omen 65 Major Plus did not come close to hitting a home run in 6 games. However, I saw Ruth hit several in the Major class. The ball did not appear to be carrying much so line drives were imperative.

Discussion: Western National Championships

We played in the 65 division in the Western Nationals and concluded on Thursday. To date, I have seen neither seeding nor bracket results while the Eastern Championships which were played at the exact same time have FINAL results posted! Is Dave in NC? I know he was not in Sacramento. Is that the difference ?

Joe, if bad swings kill bats then I would have NONE left! My good swings are handle shots that spare the barrel!
