Is there any rule about throwing a new ball into play whenever you want. Say you give the umpire your balls your using during your teams at bat you can tell the ball is losing its pop. Can you call timeout and throw in a new ball. Had a team doing this during our game yesterday they always made sure to throw in a ball especially with guys on and when they needed the homer. they'ed call timeout and throw the ump a new or a pitcher a new ball. Which is smart if this is legal.

It's completely legal, with a couple of comments ... Players cannot call "time", but may request "time" from the umpire, who normally grants the request ... The new ball introduced should go through the umpire to ensure it is a legal ball ... Otherwise, no prohibition exists in the rulebook ...

I thought there was an incident a few years ago when teams were throwing in a ball that had been stored in a cooler. It was a legal ball by description and definition, and had it been in a spring tournament when temps were in the 40s, it would have been normal. But I seem to remember that this was disallowed (the pitcher, of course, immediately realized that the new ball was colder than the other balls in the 90ยบ heat}.

Question: If I'm pitching and the hitter asks for time and they throw a new ball to the ump with the intent to put it in the game, do I have to accept it? The idea of the team on offense subbing in a ball when one is already in play opens the door for funny business IMHO.

Poollshark. I am a pitcher and this is what the team was doing during the game guys would get on they would call time and throw in a brand new ball. Very smart since I found out it's legal we did it today kept changing out balls in and out also. I think it's Bs but since it's allowed use it to your advantage.

The umpire made you swap balls in the middle of an inning for no other reason than they wanted to? It is BS! What good can come of that?
