umpire mechanics for play at home
I don't do softball, but if a play at the plate is the first play in the infield I would suggest on a ball hit to the right side move back toward the fence using 3BLX (base line extended. A ball to the left side, I would move up the 1B line a few feet. If a throw is going back to 1B from the plate, move inside the diamond and pivot (when possible) to take a play at first...if you're working by yourself. You can't be two places at once.

Myself I would try, if possible, to take all other plays from somewhere between the rubber and the plate and try to stay out the way of a thrown ball. Depends on the situation. EXAMPLE: with a runner on 3B and a fly ball to the outfield, I will back up to a place I can see the tag and catch. working two man, the BU should be taking the catch and the HPU watching the tag.
