Hey all you SME [Subject matter experts] ? Does the start of a new season automatically make you a free agent so to speak? If not how does one go about changing teams or get released?

Usually next year's season starts with the Winter Nationals.
You don't need to do anything, beginning with the Winter Nationals.

youngen ... BruceinGa has it correctly stated ... All players are "free agents" after their session at the World Masters Championships and may join any them for which they are otherwise eligible as to age, residency and team history rating experience level(s) ... There is no need to seek a release from last Season's team ... Good luck!
