| May 20 Lefty8 4 posts | Now that a few tournaments have been played which bat is better, the Ultra II Advanced or Combat Senior Bat? |
| May 20 4x4 Men's 65 601 posts | The Senior Combats seem to be out numbering the U2 Adv. by about 5 or 6 to 1. People just don't seem to be happy with the U2's knob or fragility. Some say the new U2's have a lot of pop, others say they don't have as much. The SC has every bit the amount of pop that the made the Mikens legendary and everyone wants to spend their money as wisely as possible and are going to the Senior Combat. Personally I have replaced NONE of my broken U2's with other U2's. I have gone to the Senior Combat. Again, several U2's Adv. did not make it out of the TOC without failing and the Combat Rep sold out of bats while there; the Miken Rep looked like the Maytag repairman - not much to do after the commerative bats were handed out (and lots and lots of unsold U2 Adv. bats just sitting there). |
| May 21 Downs 60 posts | Hey Lefty, I think we had this same discussion in Feb. However, I am 70, 6' 2" and 165, and just broke my fourth U-II this year and broke seven last year. It may be just my personal opinion, but I think when Miken ships out a U-II-A, they should stamp "fragile" "glass" on the package. Also, the Advanced knob kills my palm and yes, I do use an overlap grip with no part of my right hand on the bat. Oh yea, I can occasionally clear the 300 fence. However, I am now a converted Combat hitter, 30 oz. end loaded and unless Miken reverts back to the 2000-2004 U-II model, I have purchased my LAST Miken. I may still use my 585 Maniac but do not like my NRG 600. The MUIIA does not have anywhere the durability and not quite the distance when compared to the Combat. Ananconda's 1.20 bpf Combat is by far the leader today for senior's with some power. Try it, you'll like it. |
| May 21 Lefty8 4 posts | Thanks for the input I did get an Advanced last week and tried it, very, very, very disappointed in it. Even though the Miken people said it was the same bat as the original. It's far from it. Just wanted to get a feeling on the Combat before I bought one. Has anyone had a Combat break? |
| May 21 Downs 60 posts | Lefty-8: in answer to your question, I am aware of only one Senior Combat that broke. However, it was broken by BASHBRO-1, and I know that until he found the Combat he ordered his U-II's at 6 to 12 at a time. He is one of those unique senior power hitters that can really "crush" a ball. I was told he averages 1-HR per less than 7 AB's. I hit with him and his brother Tad quite a bit. The last 5 or 6 times I've seen him hit, it was a Senior Combat. He certainly can qualify for the 400 or 450 club. I watch other hitters and it amazes me how many seniors use the U-II-A and place both hands above the silver knob. Problem: you have taken away considerable bat length which seriously reduces the leverage you normally generate with swinging a 34 inch bat. Guess Miken didn't think that was important, but it sure is to me. Lefty, hope this helps AND personally I'm hoping Miken returns to their old U-II as it was the best bat, at one time. No longer. | May 22 audieh Men's 60 249 posts | Lefty, in the past 2 months I've broken a Combat Senior 26 el and a 28 el. The 26 did not have very good pop but the 28 did. After they both cracked into I check the end caps, since they are supppose to be end loaded, and the 26 had no end load but the 28 did. Personally, I was not impressed with their durability as both had less than 100 swings. However, the U11 break at about the same rate for me. I have not used the new U11 so do not know how the knob will affect the swing or pop. Here is a thought for you though. I notice many people that heavily tape their bats. A friend gave me his heavily taped U11 and it was the worse hitting U11 I have ever seen. It was just a dud so I set it aside in my closet. However, after breaking several others I had to bring it out and it was still dead. I unraveled a tremendous amount of tape and then hit with it again and it hit like any other U11. Obviously, over taping can make the bat less flexible and therefore, in my opionion, have less pop! |
| May 22 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Hey Lefty and Pete, This one's a no brainer. The Combat once broken in, is way better than the Ultra 2 Advanced. I don't know what Miken was thinking putting that handle on them and everyone tells me they're still cracking like twigs. |
