June 12 Joey525i Men's 55 32 posts | ALBUQUERQUE, NM - New Mexico has 13,712 reasons to be excited this summer. That’s the number of athletes age 50 and over who will compete in 20 medal sports at the 2019 National Senior Games presented by Humana taking place in Albuquerque June 14-25. This represents an all-time high participation in the 32-year history of The Games, exceeding its past record of 12,000 athletes tallied in 2007 by 14%. Even before this increase, the Olympic-style event was the largest multisport event in the world for seniors. https://nsga.com/softball |
June 13 Joey525i Men's 55 32 posts | One of the Games marquee participants, Julia “Hurricane” Hawkins, the 103-year-old world record holder in the 100-meter dash, who set the mark for her age group (a group of one for now) at the National Senior Games in 2017. Her time was 39.62 seconds. “She’s back now,” said NSGA CEO Marc Riker. “… But she has competition. There is another 100-year-old woman in the race. It will be a showdown you don’t want to miss Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. Out at the track at University of New Mexico.” 2019 National Senior Softball Team Participant List, 139 total: https://nsga.com/images/pdf/athlete-partlists/2019_Softball_Team_List-Title_Corrected.pdf 103 Women's Teams 50+ 30 teams 55+ 24 teams 60+ 18 teams 65+ 17 teams 70+ 10 teams 75+ 4 teams 36 Men's Teams 50+ 6 teams 60+ 5 teams 65+ 10 teams 70+ 9 teams 75+ 5 teams 80+ 1 team |

Scores are posted almost instantly online. You can even get results text messaged or emailed to you. Very impressive tournament. The question is where are all the men's teams? |

June 19 boston Men's 60 355 posts | I would venture to guess one of the reasons men's teams are limited is the new way Senior Olympics rates teams. The teams are in the various 5 year span for ages. The difference this year than in the past is that all age groups have the same rating. There are no A,B or C divisions in each age group as in the past. basically, you could have teams rated by SSUSA as the OG Outlaws rated 60 Major playing a AA team without an equalizer. I must also state that the NM Senior Olympics softball tourney is a joke. The pool games are 45 minute drop dead time. They use the worse ASA balls possible. The organizers change rules in the middle of the tournament. There is not sliding or running past a base. You must just run to the base causing collisions and opportunities for sprained knees and twisted ankles. In the 2018 Olympic games in Albuquerque the officials decided to make running to third on a fly ball or from first to third a force out. Anyway good luck to all the participants and hope you have fun. |

June 19 Omar Khayyam 1357 posts | What a terrible potential! Senior Games goal is to encourage participation in athletics by senior citizens. Can you imagine sending an average beer team to the Senior Games and encountering a powerful Major + team! That would be a turnoff! Senior Games Softball has tried to get established in California. A friend of mine even volunteered to be the coordinator for Northern California one year. Then the details came out: team fees were almost twice as high as the normal tournament fees; players were charged gate fees (a la Big League Dreams) to play—a no-no for Senior Games which require no impediments to participation including such fees for players or fans; rankings were bizarre and thus did not ensure fair competition; field venues were not the best in the area; etc. One can see why there is limited interest by men's teams in participating. My team has not attended for several years and we don't even consider it on our tournament schedule when making it up pre-season. Good concept; poor delivery by inexperienced management (my friend declined to coordinate it after his first year). |
June 19 Dbax Men's 65 2101 posts | The National Senior Games are run like the Huntsman games. After three pool games everyone is sent to an A flight, B flight, C flight etc. They don't always get it right though. And there may be some sandbagging. Lol. It's being run be USA softball. Formally ASA. |
