Since all the assn's out there are a for profit business, and call their major tournaments "World" "TOC" or what ever, fact is that that very few of these "winners" ever get to play against each other, to determine a real victor for any one the age or rating. Bragging rights for that assn only.
Seens that if they can get together for a summit to talk about rules, why can't they work together and put on a combined, middle of the USA Tournament. Move location year to year to spread the money and the travel troubles around. Then you could call those winners true WORLD cnampions or be a true TOC.
That might bring some added interest to all assn's. I'd think leagues would become more interested in putting tournament teams together as well.
After all, if you build, it they will come. Or is this thinking too much outside the box. (The BOX being assn)

not all of the senior assns are 'for profit'... there are 2-3 that are non-profit.
I like your thinking but is isn't likely to happen as there are way too many egos involved. The closest that we can get to this is to have SSWC expand the TOC to include anyone that wins in the other assn national events.
In the absence of this, we could create a mythical point system to determine the national champion. This is akin to the NCAA/BCS but only worse. :-)
Obviously, if we take the latter direction we'd have to give hypothetical weight to each assn's national event... perhaps based on number of teams entered. There would be great knashing of teeth due to ethnocentrism, etc. The more of the better events that your team played, the higher you finished, the better your chances... our version of 'strength of schedule'. In the 55 major + division, this would have favored Turn Two and CT Sportsplex in 2006... and rightfully so.
I couldn't begin to speak for the other divisions as I didn't watch them play.

Bob,
I did my try at it for the last 4 years and am in the hole from it ....Never was for $. Just the love of the game.
But your correct on the non profit thing, 501 et al, but they do make the $$$ to pay their employees etc...as I understand it.
As we see on here the EGO thing is ranpant. ie: Last word, post and all.
I've met many players and always try to connect with as many as I can in tourneys. Reno, Vegas, Huntsman, anywhere for that matter. Perhaps you some day.
I think the ego trip or what ever one calls it, should of left us a few years back.
Also agree on the TOC, but unfortunately it' is limited as to who participates.
Teams based upon # entered is a good idea. Especially with some div\bracket and more only having as few as 2 teams. And if that #, when you look at ratings involved within those.
Most don't even give awards out for orther than 1st if there are less than 6 teams.
There is a real lack of getting 6 teams together to play against equally rated teams. Many reasons for it also shedules conflict so you have to pick and choose wisely.
