Aug. 22 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Dave of SSUSA and I had a discussion at the California State Championships about tournament formats and I like the way at SPA the elimination games go to completion without time restraints. Some of the best games played all year happened there. 38 to 34 was one. 41 to 35 was another. These battles provide for great memories. Maybe we can help ourselves and Dave at the same time with some comments and opinions. |
Aug. 22 Bob50 Men's 60 242 posts | Einstein, Are you suggesting getting rid of the 5 run rule also? I hope not. I believe games should go 7 innings but not take 2 hours to complete. I suggest SSUSA get rid of the time rules, go 7 innings, retain the 5 run rule with an open inning and go to a 1 and 1 count. Also schedule the games 90 minutes apart as opposed to 75 minutes so that we can try to stay on schedule. Bob Schulz |
Aug. 22 turn2 489 posts | i do not believe that the major plus progarams should play anytype of limits on runs/ inning. major plus is the top level so why keep on restricting the major plus teams and players.let the other divisions play a limit on runs per inning. thanks, donnie turn two collectibles |

Aug. 22 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Yeah, Bob. I do think that the mercy rule should be used when lifting time limitations. I think this is how the schedules stay reasonably intact because some games go longer and some go shorter. The Tournament Director announces at the managers meeting that all teams must be ready to play 1/2 hour before scheduled times to keep things hopping along. I also favor as I've said before the 1 and 1 count and larger mat and the games will move right along, I guarantee. |
Aug. 22 the wood Men's 65 1123 posts | They have already eliminated the 5 run rule as it relates to the major + division. I liked that rule for pre-season events but not for National Championship games. I'm glad that it's gone for us. In my opinion, a team with a better defense is penalized somewhat by the 5 run rule... conversely, it helps a team with less defense. I don't really like a time limit in championship games... or in DE, for that matter. I do like them in the seeding round. The 1-1 count? I really don't have a strong opinion on this unless the batter doesn't 'one to waste' with 2 strikes. In the major + division there are usually only 4-6 teams competing. Why not extend the game time slots beyond 90 minutes? But! Do not change your scheduling format of playing each division in a session (3-4 hour time slot) and then playing another division in its own session. I hate to see the divisions playing alternating games. I don't care if we're first or last (time slots) but I totally abhor the thought of mixing in between the games of other divisions. I cannot state this strongly enough. The SSWC does this correctly already (as does SSWS and LVSSA)... do not change this. Why SPA chooses to do it the other way is anyone's guess. Everyone suffers. Aug. 22 Duke Men's 65 908 posts | I favor the 1 and 1 count with a 90 minute time limit for the double elimination portion of the tournament. Also, 1 and 1 for seeding games and only a 75 minute time limit. There should be a run rule in the double elimination bracket only. Afterall, we pay enough money to play. The rules should apply to all levels! |
Aug. 23 DMac Men's 60 207 posts | In my heart I wish all games were seven innings, but on those occasions when I have to play five games in one day, my legs are very glad that there is a time limit. |
Aug. 23 jim16 Men's 65 180 posts | Softball is a game of innings, not minutes. Get the clock ut of the game and play it the way its meant to be played. |
Aug. 24 Fred Scerra Men's 80 542 posts | einstein: I guess my view of the game is a lot different. How do you figure a 41-35 is a good game. Why not just have a home run derby? LOL One thing though this subject has been covered so much lately it is starting to get boring. |
Aug. 24 Bolivar66 42 posts | Very Simple Solution: 1 & 1 Count Bigger Mat Mercy Rule.....25 after 3, 20 after 4, 12 after 5 or 6 Every Inning Open Home Runs: Major+.......Match Plus 3 Major ........Match Plus 2 AAA ..........Match Plus 1 AA ..........1 Per Game Home Team can only Match the number of Homeruns that the Visiting Team has in 7th Inning. Anything Hit above that is an OUT. Hitting Line Drives up the Middle Directly at the Pitcher will be an Out & the Batter will be ejected from the Game. |
Aug. 24 green rocket 51 posts | All I can say as an umpire, if you agree play a regular straight softball game, don't complain when you only got 2 or 3 innings in after the time limit, and both teams have 20+ runs scored apiece. You can't have both: A tight game with every play taking on big meaning, or a team waiting to falter when they don't get the runs needed in a given innings....... The 5 run rule keeps the game going and prevents teams from scoring out of hand until the last inning is declared. Personally, I think the 5 run rule is an excellent rule and should be used thoughout any age or division. I have had many great games this way than the other..... |
