Oct. 9 bashbro1 Men's 70 267 posts | It has generally been taught that the bat swings back while the weight moves to the right side (RHB), and the bat swings forward while the weight moves back to the left side, basically. In my opinion, the batter’s weight should actually move to the right and should return to the left side while the bat is still going back in your pre-swing coiling action. This provides much more lag in your swing and uses gravitational forces to add bat speed. Even though there is a definite flow of weight to the right side, the batter’s center of gravity remains over his left side through a sort of falling action after the weight transfer step. Gravity makes this move for you; it’s not muscular thing on your part; we just let gravity do it’s thing when you drop your bat into the swing plane with the elbow into your side. With this swing mechanic, your weight actually falls back into your left thigh just before the hands reach the top of the coiling backswing behind your head. You left thigh (assumed RHB) reacts to the weight being dropped into it and then makes a turning or clearing outward motion. It’s this “reactionary hip turn” that pulls the arms, hands, and the bat down and through the ball with the use of gravitational force. The result is a swing with much more leverage and power of which your body is capable, but with the least amount of physical effort on your part. bashbro1 (Ruth 60’s Major + Kent, WA) |
Oct. 9 bogie Men's 65 448 posts | ART I know your an aerospace engineer, but could you please phrase these theories so farmers like me can understand them.......Stop thinking about hitting and give Boeing at least 1 hour a day of your undivided attention...perhaps Dianne would like an hour too.... |

Oct. 9 bashbro1 Men's 70 267 posts | Bogie my friend....you don't need to learn any hitting theories; you just keep on clubbing the ball with your farmer's strength!! LOL bash P.S. Our buddy 'einstein' has to keep his threads short as it's difficult for him to type with only one useable arm. |

Oct. 9 T-REX 64 posts | Geeez...Gravity is what slowed me down on the bases,I don't succumb to bat speed theory when it comes to hitting. How much bat speed did Hank Aaron have swinging a 40 oz. bat at a 90 + mile an hour baseball? Its not how fast you swing, but when...timing and proper swing mechanics are ultimately important. I was a AD for womans athletics and coached softball, everything we did was directed toward mechanics and our team batting average still stand as a record at the college...392,if I had taken more time to teach them to catch we would have won more games...swing hard in case you hit! |

I pull with my front side like the bat is a big tug-a-war rope behind me that I’m pulling on and simultaneously pushing with my right side/foot just like a pitcher delivering a pitch to home plate. Some push hard with the back foot and others lift the front foot well off the ground and sort of “fall” into the hitting zone like stepping off a curb. Hello T-REX. Yes, your point is well taken. Much too much emphasis is placed on bat speed, I would agree. But seniors usually want to hear about how to increase their bat speed. As far as Hank Aaron is concerned; yes, early in his career he was swinging a 38-40oz bat, but the bat’s weight played bigger part in the kinetic energy equation when the potential energy is transferred to the ball. You know that standard formula of batted-bat-speed is a functions of the Mass of the bat x the bat speed/acceleration. Of course the more mass to move with the same force applied the slower it will move, but given it’s larger mass the greater the impact will be, thereby increasing the batted-ball-speed which relates to distance a ball can travel with other parameters in place like: launch angle, under-spin applied, drag and other ambient conditions like density of the air. I like many of us seniors did played fastpitch in the 70’s and baseball in the 60’s. That old Coefficient O Restitution (COR) with a 90mpg fastball is much greater than is hitting a slo-pitch of 20-25mph. In slo-pitch we need to have more bat-speed to compensate for the lower COR of the ball off the bat and including the COR of the ball and the ball’s compression rating that compresses composite bats. We do have a longer time to generate the pre-swing potential energy in slo-pitch as compared with eight fastpitch or baseball and we must take advantage of that factor. The golf swing is a prime example of the good golfer taking full advantage of gravity just but the nature of the downward plane toward the ground. I was just trying to note that we could also take advantage of gravity (32mph-persec/persec) in our slo-pitch swing to increase out bat speed and why not? We’re old! LOL Bashbro1(W.E.
