Tournaments are Tooooo Long
Why are most tournaments 3-4 days long? The extra days result in increased tema travel cost and the need for those players who work to have to take more days off. Most non-senior tournaments only run 1-2 days, with as many as 30 teams in a division. Several of these tournaments even have 3-4 game guarantees. Shorter tournaments would also reduce the Tournament Directors cost by reducing the number of days they need to rent fields and pay for staff. What do you other players think?

I don't know which particular tournaments you're referring to. In our area most are two day affairs. Many times, however, the advance scheduling calls for a Fri-Sat-Sun format, then, when it becomes apparent that there will be fewer teams than hoped for, it changes to Sat-Sun (or sometimes Fri-Sat for 60's-65's and up). This wishful thinking makes it difficult to plan your travel ( and time-off if you're still working).

The only 4 day tournaments I've been involved with have been the SPA and SSUSA Nationals. I usually just treat that as vacation. Fortunately, the wife has always been good enough to go along with it.

I guess I suffered a senior moment while making the previous post. The point I wanted to make was let's don't make tournaments shorter at the expense of the number of games involved. I am all for reducing travel costs, but let's play enough games to make the travel worthwhile. Some of the SPA tournaments this year are down to a 4 game guarantee for the 50's and 55's.
