Jim, Talk about going south. One can't get any further, or you'd be in Matamoros, MX.
Ought to be fun though.

Yes, its as far south as we can get. Brownsville is an upscale beautiful city of approx 150,000 residents and the Rio Grande metro area about half a million. Lots of retired seniors with a great climate. Temps in feb average a low of 54 and a high of 74. Feb only gets 1.1 inch of rain each year. The facilities are fantastic and the sponsors are putting on a show.
We will have all of the senior bats available as demos for testing and Anaconda/Trump will be there with great products. The most fun event will be the hitting proficiency tournament. All contestants will be scored with 10 swings where a home run counts 4, a fly hitting the fence 3, a one bounce to the fence scores 2 and a grounder to the fence scores 1. A ball that doesnt make it to the fence will be a minus 2. The scoreboard will be manned and keep the score. It will be a double elimination tournament with a blind draw and prizes for the highest finisher in each age division. It puts an emphasis on line drives and penalizes the pop ups. We have many events planned and is an excellent way to warm up for the TOC the next weekend. SS-USA has the best events and this will be no exception. The shopping in Matamoros is world famous and just across the bridge into Mexico.
The area has two airports and is served by Southwest, Continental and Sun Country.
Beautiful weather in February, lots of softball and a tour of Mexico will be a fun time for all.

In '68 I lived there and in port isabel. It wasn't anything like you say here, believe me.
Also don't get thrown in the slammer if you cross over to MX, you may be there for a long time.
From what I've read over the years the place has become resort like all the way up to corpus christi. Yea, nothing like progress.

Hi Jim thanks for the phone call. Thanks for clarifying that individuals can attend also. I misread that it was for teams only. It sounds really exciting and I am going to look into attending. I will be coming from Vegas and noticed that Harlingen is the city I would fly into. Please post your website link when completed I would like to make my hotel arrangements also. From the conversation we had your website should be up in the near future and give everyone info on how to pay and information on all the events you are planning. Although I wouldn't be coming with a team it sounded like there was more than enough to keep an individual occupied.

Joe, There is so much going on that I casn't give all the details here. Harlingen is correct. We have added a number of corporate sponsors who include Budweiser, Walmart, Hooters, HEB food markets, Coca Cola and big discounts at the motels. Room rates go from $42 at red roof to $89 at the host hotel and their suites are beautiful and include free full breakfast and evening snack buffet. Our prizes are incredible. The sponsors have lined up almost $15,000 worth of prizes. Its $85 for individuals and that includes an embroidered spring training pullover jacket and free friday AYCE cookout at a local park with plenty of Budweiser and horse shoes and washers play. The trip to Garcias mall across the bridge into Matamoros is worth the price by itself. We will have all of the senior bats for demo and lots of drills and individual competitions that will put blisters on your hands. We will have plenty of batting gloves available and you will need them. I think the most fun competion will be an individul competition where its head to head double elimination, where you get 10 swings from either a tee or off of a live pitcher. The scoreboard will be manned and you get 4 pts for over the fence HR, 3 for a fly against the fence, 2 for one hop to the fence and 1 for a ground ball to the fence. Any hit that comes up short is a minus 2. Highest score advances and prizes are awarded in each age group. We also have HR derby, pitching, fielding, throwing and baserunning competition. You will be timed to 1st base and ranked according to all participants. The tournament starts sat am and all team members are invited to participate in the spring training and its free for team participants from the team entry fee. The weekend kicks off with a golf tourney on thursday starting at noon and is sponsored by Budweiser. Prizes there are for a number of categories including best dressed.
The City of Brownsville is upscale and sparkling and they are showing off the city. Entries can be sent to the city or to Texas Half Century. Go to www.texashalfcentuty.com for more info. The website is being added to daily so if it doesnt come up, keep trying as it will be back up when new info is added. I guarantee you will not be disappointed if you come. Its a great warm up for the TOC the next weekend. Bring your wife, she will love this kind of softball. A local radio station will be playing oldies at the park all day and it will be the biggest softball party you've ever seen. Brownsville- South Padre Island is known for parties and this is as big as it gets.
