Just finished playing in the Gold Glove in Phoenix 50AA. A 5 game gaurantee which we assumed is 3 RR and Dbl Elim, Wrong. Five games but in a RR format. Eight teams 2 groups. Group A team records are 5-0, 3-2, 3-2, 0-5. Group B records are 3-2, 2-3, 2-3, 2-3.
Winner of each group plays in championship and second place in each group plays for third. Yes, the team I played for was 3-2 which had beat the 2-3 team that got to play for third.
Worse than that is we found out Sunday morning about this format. Then when your playing your 5th game and are 3-1, you find out a team in your group went 5-0 gauranteed spot in championship. So your game means nothing, who wants to play for a chance to play for 3rd.
Now I see why only 8 Dble AA's showed up. Odds are we won't be back to the GG after 4 straight trips.
Another question is why do the 50 AA's always have to play at Desert West? Why not rotate fields every tourney? I feel like the Rodney Dangerfield of senior softball.

I just looked at the flyer for it and there is no mention or any format. Not good. Perhaps your mgr should ask before you go anywhere so you won't get x?x?x next time.

We also played in this event. We knew that we'd play 5 games and we knew that it was a RR... before we went. This worked fine for us because we knew what our game times would be, who we would play, which field, etc. This is February and we treat early season RRs as spring training.
Our division seemed to be happy with the way that it was organized.
My only complaint, if you'd call it that, is that they ran out of balls at times. Charge us $30 more (entry fee) and let us each have a dozen balls... if we run out of them then we need to chase them... or let us buy more.
All in all, we felt that it was a nice tourney.

Taits your right about our coach getting the info. This was his first time getting us into a tourney but he has learned a valuable lesson. We will definitly be better prepared next time.

Boston, thanks, that is how I learned 10 years ago, the hard way. Also consider asking who's in it and how many teams for your specific div (teams you will actually play against), now a days. It does make a difference.

Taits here's another thing that bothered me about that tourney. We played a team from Las Cruces that consisted of players from my league team and other teams in our league. There were 2 other teams we didn't get to play against, that we have never faced. We hate going to tourneys and having to play teams from our league. It seems to happen everytime.

boston, I'm the same way. Love attending but want to play different teams not the same as what are usually there, If it means playing better teams even better. but prefer playing not the same ones time after time. There are rules to help cover playing better ones as well. Your usually able to pick up come good ideas by watching and playing against higher ranked teams as well. I have a set of rules i was given by the Old A's\ Miken team I used to play against years ago. Tough nut to do, players in AA probably would laugh at them but they worked for AAA\Maj well back then, and i'd bet that is still what they use.
Again here your going to have to do a lot of asking questions and get email replies to them about WHO your playing, WHAT Div, Age your in, Format, RR double elim or Double Double elim... They do make a big difference in number of games but the other flaw in some is the sandbagging. something that still goes on but just not as obvious. WHERE or which fields you'll be on, WHEN the info will be received or posted or I can bail out without a problem and WHY does this always happen. and lastly HOW many different teams you will actually play and are they local or distant.

Hope you all get it worked out. The path is bumpy with a lot of sharp turns, dead ends, rain & some fog, But the end is through that last tunnel, if it hasn't had a cave in.
