If you played more than the one national tournament in '06 and another 1 in 07 you might have a better understanding.
But this is the scoop that fell from out of nowhere for your answer.
"That depends on the tournament. For SSUSA, rings are won, and given at no cost to the players, for the World Championships and the Tournament of Champions. For the other major SSUSA tournaments, the players win the right to buy rings at a discounted rate if they want. SSUSA has individual awards for those players, so the ring is an option if they want to get one."

Hope this helps.

It does. And I will play more when the product improves, and the various, watered down "worlds" actually mean something.

I agree some are better than others, but it all boils down to the far too many choices available and related cost to attend and put them on.
You could always buy a milling set up and a lathe. Cut down that huge tree outside and go into business on the side...Perhaps gain a wooden bat following of sorts. The assn's weren't built over night to get to where they are, and changes are not going to happen overnight. either. While I do not share in totality your "judgement" in as i'll call it, on the "worlds" I'm sure some might. But don' t knock that which you do not attend but maybe once a year, if that. At your ripe old age of 53 or so, I can see you have seen the "world" of national, state, or regional senior softball tournaments.
They are a "world" apart from league ball. That applies to all aspects of the game including but not restricted to location, cost, prizes, bats, and balls.

I do understand the difference from playing, watching, and talking to other senior players.

Again, the main deterrent is the abundance of tourneys which don't really mean much and the small turnouts. Normal economic markets correct themselves through smart spending by consumers. Apparently there are just enough senior players and teams attending all of these events to keep them in business, and not have the weak ones fall off and the strong ones survive.

1st part, it figures.

From a business analysts perspective, yours, I'd disagree.
A deterrent for what? playing a game we love, attending for something we usually do not know what the actual "prize' will be? No matter, we'll go.
Most all on here are die hards. We go, we play, we complain and cheer about them, sometimes in the same sentence.
Some assn's have folded, cut back their tournaments and or more, but those who continue try to do what they feel is best for the masses given their own situation. In these changing time I think more needs to come about however.
Only time will tell at who's cost all this will effect...."twas just, as most everything I post, my opinion.

A deterrent from spending an inordinate amount of money for a few days against a few teams to win something that in most cases has little significance.

Don't know about you guys, but I still have 10 years of college to pay for and tend to make sure I get good value for my dollars.

Maybe some of figure spending it playing ball is better than on a beer tab, trip or some other sort of entertainment. Don't have an answer for that.
Can't say a I blame you on ed bills. Maybe Bush will bail you out along with AIG and the rest.

That would be nice, but I am not holding my breath. :)

I know we all prioritize how we spend, and I would be happy to fit it in if I thought the product was at least somewhat better than I have experience and seen thus far. I know some are better than others, but many are pretty trivial and I would think bleed some of the participation from the better ones.
