Oct. 27 local 169 posts | Just returned from Phoenix. Played AAA 55's. Good tournament and good umpires. Here is a suggestion. We won in round robin and lost our first game in Double eliminations. We then played a loser of another game for the the right to advance if we won or lost. There was not alot of motivation to play a meaningless games in 87 degrees. The next game (3rd gm) was for the right to advance or go home. I understand that SSUSA wants to give each team 5 games. But it may be better served in round robin play. Play 3 games of round robin, that way they can fine tune the seeding instead of having 12 teams that are 1-1 or 6 teams that are 2-0. One more game in round robin may have more meaning than a 2nd round losers games that means nothing. Like I said it was a great tournament and this is only a suggestion. |
Oct. 27 SSUSA Staff 3505 posts | This format has been used since the 2006 California State Championships and is now the SSUSA's format of choice for three reasons: [1] It gets the teams into the brackets earlier and keeps them there longer, which is consistent with the belief of most players that the 'real' tournament doesn't begin until bracket play commences; [2] It requires fewer overall games (in brackets with less than 50 teams) than the former three-game round robin prior to a double elimination bracket; and [3] It does not require the extra "exhibition" game for just one team in any three game round robin for a division comprised of an odd number of teams, which is that team's fourth (non-standings) seeding game. The three-game-guarantee bracket format is a slight modification of the standard double elimination bracket, but is not the same as a triple elimination bracket. In a three-game-guarantee format, each team is guaranteed to have a minimum of three games in the bracket, regardless of the outcome of their first two games. Teams that might lose their first two are fed back into the lower half (Elimination portion) of the bracket and are still eligible to become the Champion by winning out for the rest of their games. It's a rare occurrence for a team to accomplish this feat, but it has been done in a few instances. |
