softballer ... The mini-tourney went great and has all kinds of potential! ... Of the 16 games scheduled, I think about five were actually played as scheduled ... Several teams that signed up were no-shows, but several others that didn't sign up did show ... And then there were the half-teams, where some of the guys weren't in town yet, so they combined, sometimes in mid-game ... One of the more impressive combinations was the Wilson Trophy 55's with the Hamel's 70's ... After an exceptionally fine play by the 70+ year old 2nd baseman going deep into the hole WITHOUT pulling a hamstring, and making the play, George was asking him if he had a snowbird card! ... The relaxed rules were very well received, and offer hope for the future ... Among the more notable changes was the abolishment of game cards ... Teams seemed to like not knowing the score, and generally not caring ... Three innings with no equalizers and a guarantee that the home team batted in the bottom of the 3rd was also a hit, especially since there was no one to prove who was ahead at the time ... Open rosters were very good for one 60's team that was short a player and picked up Corky from Miken for a game ... I was impressed that their opponent applauded their creativity instead of questioning his eligibility, which was a nice change ... Player / Umpire relations were also addressed when an umpire and a player changed roles/positions for an inning so that each could get a better understanding of the trials and tribulations that each encounters with the other in their normal roles ... In short, it was an absolute blast ... Everyone had a great time, no one took it for anything other than what it was, a fun afternoon playing the game on a sandlot basis ... This 'conceptual tournament structure' deserves serious consideration for the future! ... As they say down here occasionally: "The weather is here, wish you were beautiful" (Jimmy Buffett)

Dave,
Sounds like fun I wish we were there also. Tell my other wife Fran I said hi and miss not being able to compete in one of the best tourneys of the year. Butch
