In 1973, I played on a team in the BABF (Birmingham Amateur Baseball Federation). We were invited to play a team which was north of Bham about 50 miles and way out in the boondocks.

As we arrived, the opposing coach was driving a few head of cattle off of the outfield into an adjoining pasture. Piles of stuff everywhere! Bases were 12"x12"x4" blocks concrete. A huge rock, 6'x4'x4' rested in center field. Fly balls would hit the rock and bounce straight up for quite a distance.

The umpire did not show up; we were to have only one. So, a volunteer was called for from the bleachers. Coach's drunken friend volunteered, of course. Our lead-off stepped into batter's box; the pitcher delivered the first pitch. Unfortunately, the ump had his back to the plate, talking to someone behind the backstop. As the baseball thumps into the catcher's mitt, the umpire turns and yells "strike one"!
Long story short: we played 17 innings, several fights, won 18 to 17. Do you have a great tale from the good old days?
