Well, now I've done it!

Jimmie McKenzie and I are scheduled to meet KZOK 102.5 FM Personalities at the studio this Friday, April 17th. If we're fortunate enough to get on with Bob Rivers it should be between 9:00 and 10:00 AM. I hope we can plug the SSUSA Seattle National Qualifier happening this weekend in Kent, SSUSA Classic Rock at the RAC Qualifier August 22-23, and all of you senior softball nuts all over the country. Go here Friday morning and you can stream it live - www.kzok.com - we'll try not to make complete fools of ourselves!

The flyer for this event is out and should be up on the event page soon. We've been playing SSUSA Olympia Senior League at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey since May 19th. We love it! This is going to be a fun event! Bring your SSUSA bats, hit the best balls and play on the newest complex in the Puget Sound!

The 40 team from the Seattle area has been trying to play all season with no luck, no teams and/or too strong. It would be great if they are able to play in your tournament. Why have this age bracket if nobody let's them enter in anything? I would suggest, however that if any 40 team plays against a 50 or above team, they should not be allowed to use senior bats.

Jawood, Rally Time Sports OSC 40s is in. Do you have a contact with the 40 team from Seattle?

Also I don't have any problem crossing over to allow these teams a chance to play 50's teams as long as I have their ok.

Shane we have mixing and matching with the 40's and 50's down South and it works out most of the time. The better 50 teams Major plus and the upper major teams seem to do OK. I've done it 3 times this year and in all cases the 40's used the rules of the association holding the tourney. SSUSA allows 40's to use senior bats as do a number of other associations. I would try it I think it expands the teams that major plus teams can play. I would draw the line with the top 50 teams only though. A good middle of the pack 40 team and a 50 major plus team should compete quite well against each other. The top 40 teams are another story. Good luck.

ShaneV, Yes, most of the 40 group are good friends with most of our 50 group, we have played together for years. The 40 guys are kind of like our farm team only the farm can kick our butts. The guy who is running the 40 team plays on my league team. They want to play in this tournament and have been frustrated that no one will let them play in the area.

This will be the 4th year I've run senior tournaments in Washington State and I've always done everything possible to accomodate any team that wants to participate. Everyone knows when Major and Major+ teams want to come out it is a challenge to make it work. We just don't have that many in the Northwest but the ones we do have need to play. Doesn't matter if they're 50's or 70's. It's understandable that many teams do not want to risk injury or humiliation playing these teams. It's the same with the 40's!

Most of us seniors have no desire to go play young men even at E or Rec levels! We don't ever want to worry about collisions at the plate again.

Based on Lecak's suggestions if we have some 50's Major and Major+ we'll mix it up at least in pool play. If not, the 40's can sharpen their teeth in pool play with Wolfpack and Second Wind!

Jawood, I'll consider your farm team IN! If they're all SSUSA registered, great! If not and they are not interested in qualifying for Worlds in Phoenix, we'll play and have a good time.

I also like the idea of exhibition games and continue to think outside the box when I have time to day-dream. We have well-known players in our area and I would like to find new ways to recognize them somehow with exhibition play at events. Homerun derbys are one way but we're not all homerun hitters.

Thanks for your help guys! Together we can do anything!

Thanks, They (the 40's) do want to play in Phoenix. A HR derby in your event would be fun. If they would allow senior teams unlimited courtesy runners in the youngsters "E" events, we could compete and open up a lot of places to play.

Let's do a HR derby (yawn) and something new - a base hit derby. Position an all-star defense, let batters take 20 hacks at pitches of their choice and count the base hits (no running of course)! $10 entry, winner 50%, 2nd 30%, 3rd 20%. Tell me what you think!

Shane:

I would like to see a home run derby with a under 200 lb division and one over 200.

Thanks:

Yes, still looking for players to requalify the team for Phoenix.

I'll sure post the results and send details to Sacramento for posting shortly after the tournament August 22-23.

Response looks good, just secured 2 40+ teams, Western only got 1. Also secured overflow space so I can continue to accept entries and accomodate teams without scheduling nightmares! All will play at the RAC at some point and likely all of Sunday's games will be completed there. Please contact me soon to enter this event. I have committments from about 16-20 teams already.

When you mean requalify the team for Phoenix, what's up with that and are you still looking for players?

When you sign in 13 players at an event and expect to use that roster as your qualifying roster for Phoenix, then 4 of your players decide for various reasons not to go, you have to somehow get back to a viable number to go. Two ways I understand to accomplish this. If you can play in another qualifier with eligible players added, you have a new qualifying roster you can use for Phoenix. If I understand correctly, you also have the option if you have lost player, to add eligible players up to 12 total without attending another qualifying event but you are limited to 12. And yes we are interested in one more serious player.

A team as ShaneV described may add players, to get up to 12, from the same age group and same skill rating. They may also add three more players, for a total of 15 (or 16 in the case of teams 70+ and older), from the next higher age level and same (or lower) skill rating. The rule intent is to provide a roster-add mechanism so that a team has an opportunity to have up to five (5) reserves, should they so choose, over their normal defensive alignment (10 in the case of 65's and younger, 11 in the case of 70's and older) for any tournament requiring a 'qualifying roster' as a starting point.
