a player was injured while playing in florida. He can pitch but cannot run. He wants to know if he bats can he have a runner from home plate. He was wondering if this fell under the ADA act.

Absent more relevant facts, we do not have an opinion as to whether or not this specific player falls within the definition of coverage by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. We would presume a 'temporary' injury status would not likely fall within the definition, but a permanent disability may.

Assuming the player does meet the criteria, the ADA rules procedures are discussed in the 2009 SSUSA Rule Book at §4.5 (pages 32-33). Generally, the player may play offense or defense, or both, with specific rules handling the player's presence or absence in the lineup and batting order. If the player elects to play offense (only) he/she must bat in the proper batting order position. The player may not have a courtesy runner from the batters position to first base, but may be replaced by a courtesy runner after reaching first base. The standard courtesy runner rules would then apply.

The prohibition against a courtesy runner from home to first base affects all players and is discussed in the 2009 SSUSA Rule Book at §8.3(1) on page 56:

8.3(1) - BATTER/RUNNER REACHING FIRST BASE
Each batter must reach first base on his own.
