May 31 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | I was asked by friends to help them field a team in Reno as their major plus pitcher was a scratch. I found that deep in me I wanted to help and play. I called Dave and asked him if we could work it out and just like every other time we've confronted issues together his care for people and class as a person came to the fore and said, "Sure, c'mon up." There are still important issues and concerns that must be addressed and I believe will be as we grow and go along together. Fran and Dave are gifts to SSUSA and us, for their love and dedication and we will work with them to keep us and our game together and vital going forward. Back to the tournament. The weather is awesome except for an occasional storm that doesn't last more than an hour. The fields at Golden Eagle are state of the art and as good as anyone could expect for fun and safety. The players just seem to get better. I watched my friends in AAA and I saw many players who could play major and major plus. Both my teams, the Old A's 60's and 5 spot are in the finals on Sunday. I'll post again later tonight or tomorrow with the rest. So many great faces and good will and true affection from the likes of beautiful people and friends, Joe Lecak and his beautiful Rose, Bam, Mike Bibb, an extraordinary man and player, Leon, my old adversaries from Scrap Iron, one of my mentors, Mickey Hughes, who's never looked better healthwise or from the mound, just to name a few. Time to go play. Later. |
June 1 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | What a treat to play clearly the best 50 and over team on the planet, the Seacrest Mavericks, not once but twice. Though we lost both games we had them in both games and couldn't finish which is bitter sweet for us but takes nothing away from them and the experience of seeing up close the best players and team in the country. Congratulations, Ken Lupinsky, Mickey, Mango, Sal, Bull, Parnell, Turbo and the rest on a well deserved championship. And thanks to Clay Fox and 5 Spot for the opportunity. Charley Penes, Joe Cuneo, Rock, Kirk, Bobby, Dave, Ron, my nephew Ricky and the rest are both an honor and a treat to play with and for. My Old A's in 60 major plus with little help from me during the weekend went 7 and 0 to win the title. Congratulations Randy for a terrific job coaching and Dave Sells, Bob Rohatch, Jim Hellam, Dennis D and the rest for a terrific win. Mike Machenko was there. What a presence and what a guy. There's something wonderful when as big, powerful and accomplished a man is so genuinely friendly and open. Thanks, Mike. Just your recognition is a tonic. Congratulations to J U Entertainment for winning the 50 AAA on the first try. Jerry Jew, Junior, Joe Tang and Shack, Nelson, Rob Henly and the rest. Way to go, guys. Keep an eye on Shack, Joe Tang and Rob as they are monsters players who will be recognized for their major plus capability very soon. GSF was loaded with very good players in 60 Major plus. Danny Mac, in character, got hurt going full speed for a ball over a low fence down left field line. How's the hand, D? Corky is a man and half on the mound and Hall of Famer, Conway Waddy doesn't appear to have slowed down a step. Congrats, Woody on fielding such a terrific group of players. I could go on and on as you may know. Thanks again to everyone for the great time and experience. Way to go Fran and Dave for a great weekend. |
June 1 the wood Men's 65 1123 posts | Joe, thanks for the kudos about our team (GSF). We played real well in some games, extremely well in another but only ok against the Old A's. Going 7-0, the Old A's definitely were the best team in Reno in our division. Hopefully, none of your players viewed our quick exit from the park as a sign of disrepect but we had flights to catch. We barely made them... We concur that it was a very well managed event. We liked the format as it gave us more games to 'bear down', which should help us in the coming months. The Golden Eagle fields were great as well. I have to salute the FL Raptors for hanging in there with just 10-11 guys. They had to win 3 straight in order to make it into the final rounds and did just that. It was great to have 7 other teams and we played all of them except for FL. It's the best event (in terms of competition) since we played in the '07 LVSSA 55+... there were 8 teams there as well. As it relates to the fields, hotel and overall ambience, it would be awfully difficult to top this Reno tourney. Not to dwell on anything negative but the PPR really is an impossible situation. While it wasn't called that often, and didn't impact the outcome of any of our games, it is crystal clear to me that it will continue to be interpretted inconsistently. However, it did cost us a double play in a game. Not only do the umpires dread the rule, some don't seem to understand all of the PPR's implications. In my opinion, it is only a minimal deterrent against hitting the middle, there will still be injuries. How does the PPR affect my overall feeling about the Reno event? It only slightly comes into my thinking... after all, this rule will be there in all SSUSA tourneys and isn't indigenous to Reno. BW |
June 1 Lecak Men's 60 1026 posts | Joe great seeing you. We had a great game against each other. Congratulations to the Mavericks they are the measuring stick of senior softball. It is a pleasure playing against the best. To the other four 50 major plus teams who were there all of the teams are well deserving of their status as major plus teams. There is a fine line between winning and losing, there is no shame in losing to the best teams in senior softball. |
