Sept. 3 the wood Men's 65 1123 posts | BR: The cost of travel is governed, in part, by the type of travel your team intends. I presume that you're a 50 team and you did ask for CA mgrs. I'm no longer a mgr but I have stayed very close to the expenses involved in this sort of thing. Many of our players use the 400 mile trip as the maximum for car travel, Anything beyond this requires flights. We only play together once per month but we're a 60 team (and need longer recuperation periods). I'm sure that you know the cost of hotels, gas, food, flights, etc. In terms of keeping the costs in line, we have decided to avoid 'small events with large names'... if you are a 50 team, this is perhaps even more important for you... playing over three days has been, more often than not, a waste of time. The exception to this are national tourneys... but some of them are more about hype than substance. If you get your team to commit to a schedule early enough, you can save some airline dollars. But the single biggest savings is to eliminate the 'fluff' and only attend the real 'stuff'... knowing the difference is huge. It's fair to say that in looking back over this season alone, there are two events that we (GSF) should have avoided... both of them were played over 3 days. In addition to our players taking extra time off work needlessly, we played 9 of the 10 games on baseball fields... with baseball dimensions. Fpr what it's worth, these sort of events have larger entry fees, which conflicts with budgetary needs. We're hearing that lots of other teams are going to a more regional schedule and reducing/eliminating the longer flights, etc. Sometimes the 'host hotels' do offer you a savings but not always. While the economy has rebounded somewhat, the need to be financially vigilant still exists and will continue to do so. I hope this prooves helpful for you. Bob Woodroof |
