Nov. 21, 2009 DMac Men's 60 207 posts | Alternative to Platooning I was out running this morning and I got to thinking about Einstein's annual push for free defensive substitution. How's this for an alternative? * Ten man lineups. You hit, you play the field. * No CRs. If you can make it to first base you can make it the rest of the way. * No reentry rule except for injuries. This would force teams to make decisions. Do we go with the fast singles hitter who has a good glove or the big bomber who can't outrun Rosie O'Donnell and is a liability in the field. Before you write me off as a skinny guy with issues, think of what might result. Teams would carry less players so we might just end up with more teams. Also, there would be no reason to stockpile power hitters which may very well result in less divisions. I realize this might force some players to get fitter but that's a good thing. Trust me, I won't miss running for you. |

I think change is inevitable and can be positive if we pick the most important and fundamental stuff to agree on. Then we can work to not throw the baby out with the bath water. |
Nov. 21, 2009 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | I still think free defensive subbing brings our game closer to the competitive game lots of us want to see than batting 15. Good bats and good balls. Anything less is ignorant or someone trying to sell us something. |
Nov. 21, 2009 Dirty Men's 50 1371 posts | How't this compromise? No, no, no free substitutions. Only bat 10. And no, no, no courtesy runners. And no, no, no special bats. It is soooo degrading to seniors that we need special bats to be any good. Step up guys, and have some pride. |
Nov. 23, 2009 Paco13 424 posts | DMac, that is extremely selfish of you in suggesting that only fit people are to have fun. Softball is what it is softball; there is no future in this. When you guys get it to UR heads that this is just a game, and at this age we all should be thankful that we can spend time with our friends while enjoying a good game. I play SS and in many occasions I have not turn 2 because the runner is in front of me and I am not about to hit him, it is not worthy to hurt somebody over this game...Come on guys is just a game, lets have fun and if we have to run for our friends so they can too enjoy the game; let it be. Too much emphasize in winning, we did that when we were younger, now lets just enjoy it and be blessed. |

I am guessing you do, but based on the comment above, why would you? As far as runners interfering with the turn at second, I don't want to see anyone get hurt either. Warn them, twice if you want, but if they continue then they are knowingly putting themselves as risk and if they do get hit whose fault would that be. Trust me, they are staying the in the way to gain an advantage, and what right do they have to do that? It is pretty easy just to move off to the side. If they choose not go, que sera sera. And unfit people are allowed to have fun. That is what checkers is for. :) |
Nov. 23, 2009 Paco13 424 posts | Dirty, UR a tough man, truly I can not deisagree with U. I am just trying to be nice. U get a shot over the bow the next one is dead center. LMBO. |
Nov. 23, 2009 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Paco, Dirty Gary Sommers likes to "mess" with people. He's admitted it time and again. He likes drawing you into a discussion without being open or meaning anything he says. It's his idea of a good time. We got him figured out and no one takes anything he says seriously. |
Nov. 23, 2009 Paco13 424 posts | No wonder they call U Einstein...UR a genius. |
Nov. 23, 2009 Dirty Men's 50 1371 posts | Paco, don't let him fool you. He is called einstein because of his absurd hair. But since you decided to interject yourself gump, why do they keep score? Winning obviously means something, otherwise I would not need to know the score. As far as the runner coming into second, he gets a warning, then he is staying in the way at his own risk. Why should anyone let a guy playing the game the WRONG way get an advantage? |
