Playing ASA rules.
A player using a unapproved bat gets a hit. Is the batter out , only after the other team ''appeals'' the bat. Or can the ump call the player out without an ''appeal'' once he sees the bat was illegal?
Bottom line.....is the illegal bat rule an ''appeal'' play?

My observation on what's presented...

It's an appeal play if the opposing teams brings it (the bat)to the umpire prior to the next pitch or the defense teamsleaving the field of play. Batter would be "out" and ejected from the contest.
The umpire can look at the bat on his own and make the call.
Also the organization (ASA, NSA, etc) can also take further action not to mention the tournament/league can also sanction said player.
This whether the batter knew about the equipment or not.

Gentleman: It's the Umpire's job to check the bat's and KNOW what bat's are ALLOWED BEFORE THE GAME!! As at any tournament there's a LETTER POSTED: What 's legal and NOT-ALLOWED...The penalty for using an altered or illegal bat is as follows: If the batter hits the ball with an altered or illegal bat, the ball is dead, the batter is out, EJECTED from the game and/or tournament, and immediately reported to the Tournamnet Director--State Director--For consideration of Disbarment Procedings.Have a good day Gentleman..Jimmy#7
