Anyone have a recommendations on how to speed the healing process for a mild hamstring pull? I pulled it on Saturday, iced it immediately, hot epson salt baths, doing some strechting, on an anti-imflammatory, getting better, hopefully will be ready to play on Tuesday in Reno. Does the wraps or thigh supports work?

Kirk, I did the same thing in Vegas, 2nd game first day. Iced and then bought the Shock Doctor thigh sleeve at Dicks Sporting goods..Was still a little sore but I played the rest of the tourney with no problem..Shock Doctor is about $50 for the sleeves and seem very heavy but they actually are hardly noticeable..I am also going t be in Reno and will wear them every game. Hope this helps..

1) speeding up the healing process for a hamstring process is a slippery slope... you could very well exacerbate a small problem into a larger one.
2) the best remedy that I've experienced with a hamstring injury is acupuncture...

If you are doing static stretching before activity, don't. Static stretching actually makes
muscles tighter and weaker in the immediate short run. Get a dynamic (moving) stretching routine before activity. Static stretching is good after activity. If you get a bruise and it moves down your leg, the size of the bruise is an indicator of how much damage you did. Massage can break up the bruise.
Before the games warm up well. Many consider jogging the best warm up before games. Try a little jogging before each inning. Many wear compression shorts all the time as a preventive.
If possible, avoid fast starts and stops, usually doesn't work if competitive. Adrenal does ease pain once get going.

#6, I think I got in such good shape that my body couldn't cope. I will be Reno and ready to rock'n.

Captain Kirk, seriously, sometimes weight training can inadvertently create imbalances which lead to injury. A good PT can determine if your hammies are tight or loose and prescribe an appropriate regimen. Deep squats are the best single weight lifting exercise and might help once you are w/o pain. Start slow.

Two years ago I sustained a mild to medium Hammy pull on the 1st day of a 3 day tourny ..I bought a thigh wrap and wrapped the area fairly tight..hoping to limit the hammy from over extending...Well by the second game of 2nd day...I barely could walk...It seems by wpapping it too tight it actually pulled the hammy inward and didn't allow for normal stretching and movement and caused twice the tear I originally had, and added 6 more weeks to the healing process. For me.... I now just Ice it for 36 hours taking anti-imflammatory and try walking as soon as possible ( not running for 2 weeks ) without any wrap at all...seems to work for me....good health to all.

Hey Capt:

Here is a quick cure...that really works.

I had a deep ham pull and went to my chiropractor and he had his assistant massage person give me a massage in the pulled area.

She really went deep...brought tears to my eyes (it hurt). Three one hour sessions over a week got rid of the problem and I was back to about 90-percent.

Told a few others about it and they have been going there now to get their pulls taken care of so they don't have to miss any tournaments.

This may sound strange, but it has worked for me on several occasions. After pulling my hamstring, I got on an excercise bike with low tension for about 20-30 minutes. Riding the bike is natural movement for the muscle and I am ready to play again in about an hour. This does not seem to work for any other muscle pulls.

Will have the massage today,no pain no gain, but it works. Thanks for all of the good advice. Probably need to get into a good stretching routine, all of the muscle are just to tight. I have been going to PT, she has me doing some stretching exercise that are working, also been going to the pool and that is helping. Will be ready to go by Tuesday at 8 A.M., play Prime Time at Golden Eagle. The weather looks good.

Capt, now that you have disclosed that tightness is your problem, it is clearer what you should do. Stretching is good, but under no circumstances do static stretching w/in 3 hours of any movement except walking. Yes, there is good science for this. Static stretching weakens muscles and tightens them for about 3 hours. It is good in the long run so do what your PT suggests but don't static stretch before games, practice or any swinging. Dynamic stretching routines can be found online. You must warm up well before activity- as previously suggested, jogging is perfect and think about jogging between innings. It is true that warm muscles are more flexible.
One final thing, the magnesium absorbed in Epson Salt soaks relaxes muscles. I also take magnesium
supplements orally to enhance this relaxation effect. The science for this is sketchy, but it seems to help until your magnesium gets up to the
proper level, whatever that is. I think it helps me as I am very tight, but I do many things and it is hard to know what works and what doesn't.
