Midwest just received a bunch of copies of Softball Magazine in preparation for Bat Wars. There is an excellent picture of AC Linde of the Old As batting and a nice write-up on the Old As and the Palm Springs tournament.

Bat Wars is at Midwest this weekend, July 15, 9:00 - 12:00. The web site for information is www.batwars.com. There is a $5.00 fee to get into the park, but it is wonderful batting practice as all of the new bats in all weights are there, and you can take swings the whole time although you are given so many and then go back in line for the next session. Coach got about 50 swings in last year and only bought two bats.

How did Indy Fog do in Champaign?

Thanks in advance

Redeye, your ears must have been burning. Someone was just telling me some nice things about you. Bat Wars is only on Saturday from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (yes, I did mess up the original post, but it is right on Bat Wars). They come in and set everything up on the turf field. People take their swings, and then get back in line for another session. It is during the All Nighter; so you are liable to see anything going on in the area besides Bat Wars. It is also the reason that the gate fee is $5. There are also bat vendors there, and you can sometimes get a deal on those bats. The Bat Wars bats are boxed back up and moved at the end of the event. It is pretty awesome to see hundreds of bats to pick from to get your swings in.

Indy FOG took third in the 55 AA. Fossils and Oshkosh were still in, but Coach would not let me watch the championship game. I believe that Indiana Classics took third in 50 AAA (congratulations, Rabbit). I hope that you had a good tournament.

I attended Bat Wars in 2000 at Vera, Fl. Back then Mizuno, TPS, and Miken gave away tee shirts and hats if you tried their bats. I don't recall what Worth gave, even if they were there. Easton gave 2 tickets good for a hotdog and beer, or two of each. You can only imagine how many times I hit Easton bats.
Nancy, as for "wonderful batting practice", it was terrible in Vera. They used pitching machines which don't deliver a consistant good pitch. We did had an enjoyable conversation with Gene Smith of Softball Mag and even volunteered to shag balls in return for a Softball Mag tee shirt and free admitance to hitting.
About three years Softball Mag put on a fast pitch Bat Wars in Woodstock, Ga. Since it was only 2 miles from my house so a teammate and I dropped by to check it out. They only had fast pitch bats (duh), the heaviest being 26 oz. and most were 24 or 25 oz. We destroyed 4 or 5 bats and then left. I see now that the age limit for Fast Pitch Bat Wars is 18. Oh well, it was fun. I really appreicate the workers leaving all of the balls in the trees for me to pick up on Monday!

Bruce, I once heard that most pitchers get killed by a ball in batting practice with their own team; so I guess that I probably respect even a bad pitching machine. One with real balls and bats seems like a luxury compared to the pitching machines and balls we practice with here, and you would never want to sacrifice a good bat, let alone your own bat, on those.

I had a couple of people ask two questions; so I will answer them here. The only slow pitch Bat Wars left is at Disney's Wide World of Sports on September 23 (9:00 - 5:00). The Softball All Nighter is a tournament that starts at midnight Saturday and lasts until about 3:00 PM Sunday. Let's just say that the kids get a little wild after being up for a couple of days especially if they are drinkers.

Also I was just told that the Fossils won our bracket and just wanted to congratulate them. We always enjoy playing your team and wish you the best of luck in the future.
