Cow Town Classic Hosts 39 Teams to Start the 2019 Midwest Series

SHAWNEE, Kan.  - The 2019 Cow Town Classic, held here at Mid-America Sports Complex, hosted 39 teams April 4-7, to kick off the Midwest Series.

The six-team Men’s 65 AAA/AA/70 Major Division started the tournament on April 4, playing a single elimination bracket, with the top two seeds earning a bye, following seeding play.

Top seed KC Kids 65 (KS) won the division, defeating Plainsmen 65 (NE) 25-9 and 50 Caliber 65’s (MO) 23-11 in the championship game. 50 Caliber 65s, the No. 2 seed, defeated KC Storm 65 (KS) in a thriller, 25-24, to advance to the championship game.

NSC Chets 65s (NE) and Midwest Express 70s (IA) rounded out the six-team field.

The tournament continued with the weekend session, as the Men’s 40-60 age divisions began play April 6.

In the four-team Men’s 40 Division, Midwest Elite (KS) came back to double-dip KC Monarch (KS) by scores of 20-4 and 20-11, in the championship and “if” game, respectively.  KC Monarchs defeated Midwest Elite, 25-23, earlier in the bracket, to advance to the championship game. KC Lights Out (KS) finished in third place.

In the five-team Men’s 50 Major Plus/Major Division, B&B Drywall/World Gym (KS), the No. 4 seed in the double elimination bracket, posted a perfect 4-0 record, including a 29-27 win over Iowa Demons/CNU in the championship game. Top seed KC Vintage (MO) rebounded from its opening bracket game loss against B&B Drywall/World Gym, 20-13; with back-to-back wins over The Persuaders (KS) 21-15 and KC Classics (MO) 30-22, en route to their third-place finish.

In the eight-team Men’s 55 Major/50 AAA Division, Maher Homes Nebraska Elite 50’s went undefeated in bracket play with a 4-0 mark, capped off by a thrilling 21-20 win over Drury Inn Road Dogs 50 (MO) in the championship game. Iowa Demons 55 finished in third place, after winning three straight games in the elimination side of the bracket.

The five-team Men’s 55 AAA Division featured top seed Bear’s Ballers (MO) running the table going 3-0 in bracket play, including a walk-off 21-20 victory over American Mortgage Pro’s (OK) in the championship game. Trailing 20-14 heading into the open inning, Bear’s Ballers held off American Mortgage Pro’s to a scoreless top of the open, before rattling off an incredible seven-run rally in the bottom half of the open to complete the come-from-behind win. American Mortgage Pro’s came out of the elimination side of the bracket with three straight wins to punch its ticket to the championship game. KC Renegades (KS) finished in third place.

In the three-team Men’s 60 Major Division, J & J’s Sports/Miken/Demons (IA), JW Wood Floors (NE), and Mayhem (OK), all played a double round robin to determine the champion.

In the end, J & J’s Sports/Miken/Demons posted a perfect 4-0 record to claim the top spot. JW Wood Floors and Mayhem each finished with 1-3 records, splitting their head-to-head meetings. JW Wood Floors would earn the tie-breaker, via runs allowed, to earn second place.

In the four-team Men’s 65 Major/60 AAA Division, top seed 50 Caliber Silver St. Louis 60 (MO) posted a perfect 3-0 record in bracket play, including a 25-21 win over Big Daddy’s Donuts 60 (MO) in the championship game. Carriage Homes 65 (MO) finished in third place.

In the four-team Men’s 60 AA Division, top seed MN Lumberjacks was upset in their opening bracket game, 16-12, against Redwings (MO). MN Lumberjacks rebounded, winning four-straight games, including avenging their earlier loss with back-to-back wins over Redwings, 25-21 and 14-7, in the championship and “if” game, respectively. R&K Drywall (OK) finished in third place.

The 2019 Midwest Series continues with the Oil City Classic, May 2-5, in Tulsa, OK.

The remaining tournaments of the Midwest Series include: the Missouri Open (May 30 - June 9 in Columbia, MO); the Sooner State Championships (June 27 - June 30 in Tulsa, OK), and the Kansas City Classic (Aug. 8 - 11 in Lee's Summit, MO)

As part of the Midwest Series, teams will receive $50 off each tournament they enter if they have played in one of the previous tournaments. Play in all five tournaments, and the fifth (Kansas City Classic) costs $250.

The top five teams with the most accumulated points (10 for first, 9 for second, 8 for third, 7 for 4th,6 for 5th, 5 for 6th, 4 for 7th, 3 for 8th, 2 for 9th, 1 for showing up) will receive $400 towards their entry fee for the 2019 LVSSA/SSUSA World Masters Championships from Tournament Director Will Rogers.

To be eligible for the $400, teams must play in three of the first four and MUST play in the August Kansas City Classic.

One team (having played in all five tournaments of the Midwest Series) will be drawn from a hat for the 6th team to receive the $400.
