| March 5, 2013 southpaw | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Memories From Yesterdays Gone By 1962--13 & 14 years old baseball league. Our coach was a great guy, but not a very good coach. We were not a very good team either. My uncle, 8 months older, pitched a no-hitter and we lost 4/3. My good friend, Wayne, also pitched a no-hitter and we lost. After an 0/17 start(!), we came to our last game of the season. All the players were there, but no coach. He had gone on vacation and did not inform us. As we were standing around, wondering aloud about what were we going to do, a man in the stands heard us. He stood up, came toward the fence and said: "I have been watching you guys all year. I think I can help." He made a number of adjustments on our defense, changed the batting order, and we defeated the first place, undefeated team who was our opponent! To this day, I do not know who the gentleman was and have not seen him since. Do you have any memories of days gone by? |
| March 3, 2013 southpaw | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Birmingham Tourney cancelled Fields were already booked, so I am unable to hold our little warm-up tourney. First time in almost 20 years that I have had to cancel because of weather! Oh well, there is always next year. Thanks for your interest, here in the South. |
| Feb. 27, 2013 southpaw | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: March 2 Tourney in Birmingham Due to weather conditions, the tourney is cancelled. Thanks to everyone who expressed interest. There is a possibility I can secure fields (Green Springs) for the 9th (next Saturday). I will post something later today. |
| Feb. 23, 2013 southpaw | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: March 2, Warm-Up Tourney in Birmingham Jim, I do have connections, But "He" doesn't care about my interference concerning the weather! Right now, crossed fingers is not working very well. We will keep an eye on the weather and contact everyone by Wednesday and make a decision. today (Saturday) the forecast says 30's and snow flurries on March 2. 3 days prior to that it is to be around 60, so things can change rapidly. Thanks for your patience. |

| Feb. 15, 2013 southpaw | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: March 2, Warm-Up Tourney in Birmingham Just a reminder: I did not list the entire schedule. I gave just the first games for 5 teams in each pool. First games for some teams are not until noon, however, that means 3 of the 10 a.m. teams will have played their second game by 1 p.m. |
| Feb. 14, 2013 southpaw | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Just Wondering about the total number of tournament teams in the state of California. Does anyone have an idea? I ask because there are probably no more than a dozen teams in the state of Alabama. I know that difference in population is a factor; but, I would like to hear your thoughts on other reasons. When I started getting a 50/over team together ten years ago, I called 75 men whom I had grown up with and played baseball and softball together over the years. Two men were still active and playing softball, but would not even consider tournaments. Is it simply a matter of too much fried food?! |
| Feb. 14, 2013 southpaw | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: March 2, Warm-Up Tourney in Birmingham Please forgive my poor grammar (has had). We still have 14 teams and can take one more. |
| Feb. 14, 2013 southpaw | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: March 2, Warm-Up Tourney in Birmingham C&M Sports has had to drop from tourney. I will make adjustments. If another team is interested in joining, please let me know. |
| Feb. 14, 2013 southpaw | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: WORST OUTFIELDER-In Your Opinion Years ago, our LCfielder was running hard toward the fence, looking back for the ball and our RCfielder yelled "plenty of room" just before the LCfielder's forehead connected with the top crossbar of the fence. Knocked him out. For the rest of the year, whenever a fly ball was hit, the entire team yelled "plenty of room"! |

| Feb. 8, 2013 southpaw | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: A Fresher Re-Fresher On Warm-Up Tourney in Birmingham Hey mc47, I did get your phone message last night, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Hope things work out for you to be able to play senior tourneys this year. Thankfully, a new team has contacted me, so I am waiting on Maddux 50's and R&P landscaping 60's to verify this weekend. We will have at least 13, possibly 15 teams. |
| Feb. 3, 2013 southpaw | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: A Fresher Re-Fresher On Warm-Up Tourney in Birmingham Maddux, a 50's team has inquired as well as another 60's team. I am trying to secure a 4th field. |
| Feb. 1, 2013 southpaw | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: A Fresher Re-Fresher On Warm-Up Tourney in Birmingham Friends, there are a number of restaurants and fast foods in close proximity to the park, however, the concessions at George Ward Park are excellent as well. Not just your typical plain burgers and hotdogs, but hot sandwiches like ham, turkey, Blts, etc. All very tasty! |
